This is me introducing myself. I am a beginner, I only know half the ひらがな alphabet. I am 17 and I am heavily invested in learning 日本語. Because my amazing girlfriend is 日本語 (she was an exchange student), I love すし, I like Japanese history and I want to live there someday. I took French for 2 years already, but I wasn’t very interested in the language, so I only learned a little bit (at least I can maintain a short conversation with a french person lol). I really want to learn 日本語 I have been trying to get TextFugu for a long time time now! I am soo glad I have it. But I am also taking 日本語 in my high school and the 先生 is not very good.. Also there are soo many learning sites out there! I want to be fluent, but I don’t know exactly how to study to learn the fastest while having to learn Japanese in high school. Oh and I’m usually fairly tech-savvy but I cannot figure out how to make Anki work for the life of me!
~アーロンSeptember 25, 2012 at 11:34 pm #35724Welcome! What issues are you having with Anki, and which OS are you on?
I don’t mean to be rude, but I always appreciate corrections so…
こにちわ should be こんにちわ (technically it should be こんにちは、 but こんにちわ is just fine is certain crowds — usually younger people) Actually, I’d just stick with using こんにちは for now. は is the particle “wa” in this case.
“my girlfriend is 日本語” should be “my girlfriend is 日本人” 日本語「にほんご」 – Japanese langauge 日本人「にほんじん」 – Japanese person.
がんばってくださいね

September 26, 2012 at 8:42 am #35729No ill feelings here, thanks for the learning experience. I think I have Anki 1.2.8? My issues with it are as follows: I can’t figure out how to study only the characters I want to learn, it keeps introducing too many or none at all. When I want to study longer sessions, I can’t get it to go longer. Lastly I keep clicking the randomize button, but it doesn’t change the order. Every time I try to fix it, I just make it worse. Can’t I just use Wanikani instead?

~アーロンSeptember 26, 2012 at 9:15 am #35732You can do selective study on any deck. Open up the deck you want to study, click the change button and then just choose which cards from that deck you want to study.

September 26, 2012 at 2:39 pm #35747Lol okay then AKB48 seems to makes songs about everything. For me Anki seems a bit more complicated then that..
~アーロンSeptember 26, 2012 at 5:07 pm #35750This is what I recommend for learning the kana anyway. You can choose the characters you want to study in the hiragana and katakana sections then hit practice and it will start.
September 27, 2012 at 8:28 am #35756Oh yeah, thanks,I’ve been using that as part of Textfugu’s program.

I’m guessing that means you haven’t learnt the half which includes the ん? Only it’s こんにち. =P
Also, it’s the topic particle は, not わ (but still pronounced the same). =)
Welcome, in any case.
September 28, 2012 at 3:53 pm #35786Grrr I am using my computer typing in romaji and out Hiragana. I think I am typing it in right, at least according to what you guys are saying. But my computer keeps changing everything..
~アーロンSeptember 28, 2012 at 3:54 pm #35787I hate romaji..
~アーロンSeptember 28, 2012 at 4:40 pm #35788ん is a little tricky when it’s followed by an あ-line or な-line character – generally you’ll need to remember to type it as nn or n’. And は is always typed as “ha” even when it’s pronounced “wa”. =)
I’ve also noticed, at least on the iPad, that the text-entry box doesn’t deal well with typos – if I try to delete the mistake and re-type it without confirming, it writes out everything I typed; mistake, correction and all…

AnonymousYeah it’s part of the algorithm that helps more commonly used Kanji come in for you first.
September 28, 2012 at 6:34 pm #35790No, I’ve only ever noticed in java-based forum text input boxes in Safari, and it does something similar for English typing as well. It doesn’t happen in other apps like Notes or Facebook.
