    わたしはZachです。

Besides saying hello after lurking for so long, I’ve got a question about a sentence that popped up in season two that I can’t seem to find the answer to.

    The sentence is: 十は七じゃありません。

I was wondering why in this case 十 gets to be pronounced with it’s onyomi reading (じゅう over とお) while 七 uses it’s kunyomi reading (なな over しち). Is this just some exception in a long list of exceptions? I’m under the impression a kanji without attached hiragana would use the onyomi (looking at 十).

    Loving this site!

    ようこそ

七 is a weird one in that its on’yomi and kun’yomi are fairly interchangeable.

    Welcome!

Yeah, the numbers all use on’yomi when alone, EXCEPT for 4 and 7.  For those two numbers, the on’yomi and kun’yomi are exchangeable when the kanji is by itself.
