I am completing Lesson 1 and I following the instructions :-) My names is Jason, I live right outside of Washington, DC. I have also had a fascination and appreciation for Japanese culture. I have wanted to learn Japanese for a very long time but I immediately get intimidated by the kana and kanji. So this is my first step to learning this wondrous and scary language and learning more about the culture!

I want to learn Japanese so that I can:

    1. Travel to Japan and communicate with native Japanese speakers
    2. Maybe one day work in Japan
    3. Read manga without translations

Practicing the hirigana sounds, and I am at my first impasse.
す vs つ I know they are tonally different, but its a bugger getting the “t” sounds in.

ら り る れ ろ this sounds is not native at all lol. Seem like it should be a combination or d&l for the sound, but my mouth keeps coming up with rolled r’s lol…

    Okay back to practicing.

    Hey Jason!

Don’t fear the kana! When you get going it’s really not bad at all! The R sound is definitely a bit of a pain. I’ve got some musical training so I’m used to practising until things start to hurt, and I always recommend that approach to anyone. Practise the sound until your tongue hurts! It’s also not a bad idea because Japanese just generally requires more tongue movement than English does, so you’ll have to build up some strength there anyways :D

Hope you have a good time! If you get stuck on anything, give us a shout. There are answers to be found here!

the つ and す I didn’t really find that dificult but the ら り る れ ろ are just a pain for most people but it just takes some practise and I’m sure you will be able to get it right ^_^ .
