I am learning Japanese because of my deep infatuation with Japan’s culture and way of life. One day, I want to visit, and perhaps live and work in Japan, so knowing the language is the first step towards that goal, and it is the most important. There are several online resources I engage in that speak exclusively Japanese, and I am only able to pick out a few things without using online translators. I would like to become fluent in the language so that I can not only understand this type of media, but also engage and participate in it like any other Japanese citizen. I also imagine that along the way, I will be able to have fun picking apart the Japanese dialogue that these medias produce so that I can learn new things along the way and mentally hear my progress as I go on.
In short, I’m learning Japanese to get a better understanding of their culture, and of what I want out of my own life as well. This is a very important step for me, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but have lacked the drive for it. My drive is returning now, and I’m going to utilize it to its fullest potential in order to succeed in fulfilling my dreams, even if I don’t fully understand them quite yet. Even if Japan isn’t in my future, just knowing that I was able to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world will set the bar high for anything else I want to conquer in the future. Wish me luck!

I typed this up when I started Season 1 and powered my way through. Now I’m feeling pretty confident in my ability to read hiragana at a decent pace, and I’ve just purchased my first month to move onto Season 2 in full stride.
I’ll keep this post bookmarked to remind me of my dedication and keep making progress moving forward.

What’s your secret to reading hiragana at a decent pace? I’ve been at this for years, and my Japanese reading speed still ain’t even close to my English reading speed…
February 20, 2017 at 1:01 pm #50088Well, “decent” by my own standards at my own positioning. I can read a word within a few seconds usually, haha. But I’m starting to see the trick; like when I read English, I don’t individually scan each letter and figure out what it means. I look at the whole word and my mind fills in the blanks for me. This is starting to happen with a few Japanese words that the book is drilling into me, and I think that’ll be the secret to how I’ll read the way I read English today in a fast pace.
I don’t expect that my Japanese reading speed will exceed my English reading speed (as much as I hope so) but I’m hoping for it to become close within the next year.
