Hello TextFugu! My name is Alex and I’ve been a self-learner studying Japanese since Jan 2 this year. I started out with Tofugu’s Hiragana and Katakana guides and they’ve worked very well for me with their mnemonics lessons, so I’ve been following Tofugu’s blog and YouTube quite a bit since then. However this past week I’ve noticed that my study habits have started to slack and I want to make sure I keep at this, so as of today I am a TextFugu member!
Why am I learning Japanese?
Not to sound like a weeb, but I will admit it’s mostly for entertainment purposes. (at least for now) I’ve been exposed to so much of the Japanese language through anime, manga, video games, movies, and music, that it just seems like a waste to not learn it now. (why throw away that immersion?) I do have bigger plans than just being able to watch Crunchyroll without subtitles though. Right now I have a few Japanese coworkers at my retail job who only know a little English, so I’d like to help communication go a little more smoothly for them. If I can progress really far with my studies, I’d like to work either in translating or teaching English/Japanese… But that’s gonna be a while. Gotta start somewhere, right?
Anyway, thanks for having me! I’m looking forward to learning some 日本語!
