    皆さん、お早うございます。
Hello all. My name is Corey and I’ve joined TextFugu to see if I can improve my Japanese. I suspect I am a bit unlike other learners here as I have been taking classes at my University. (3rd year now) I also spent March – July 2010 on exchange in Kyoto and have been in Nagoya since September on another exchange. I hope to use TextFugu to supplement my studies as I have used three different textbooks and have found them all to be a bit lacking.

Here’s hoping that 2012 is good to me in my Japanese studies.
    Corey

Welcome. You’re not quite unlike everyone else, though I’ve just finished my first year, here. =)

It’s great that you actually live in Japan. Nagoya is my city’s sister city, though I only passed through when I was in Japan in 2010 – all the guidebooks were a bit “meh” about it. How are you finding it? And how was Kyoto? Did you see lots of the temples, or were you busy doing other things?

It is possible that I was spoiled during my time in Kyoto. I find Nagoya to be too urban in many respects. It took me a month to realize what was missing… the home gardens and rice fields that I had grown accustomed to seeing. Nagoya is nice and the people are great, but I think I prefer a bit more rural feel such as I felt in Kyoto and the surrounding areas. There are plenty of things to do here in Nagoya and a person could stay busy all the time with one thing or another, but having a student budget reduces what you can do by quite a bit.

Temples (and Shrines). While I was in Kyoto, I was introduced to 朱印長 (like this- http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/pilgrimages-pilgrims-japan.html#books) and spent my free time in Kyoto gathering “stamps” in my book. One of the first things I bought after arriving in Nagoya was another 朱印長 and have been slowly adding to it when I visit temples and shrines. The last was from Atsuta-jingu on New Year’s Eve when I was there for はつもうで. Sadly, my favorite temple in Nagoya so far, (because of it’s daibutsu) Togan-ji, does not do 朱印.
