As the title says, its great to meet all of you. I am Kris and I live in the state of Florida, USA. To give a little background, I have always been a fan of anime (I started with Speed Racer back..umm..actually i dont remember..I was just told that I used to watch it..x.x) and of Japan and Japanese styles and culture. In 2004, I joined the US Navy and was able to get stationed in Japan for 3 years, from 2005 to 2008. While I was there, I took a Japanese class and was able to work my way around without any issues, but I also couldnt really speak Japanese either (I still call my level survival Japanese). I’ve been trying to continue my Japanese learning for a while but havent gotten far, even though my wife is Japanese. I found this site and got hooked by the first season. I am hoping my enthusiasm will continue and I will be able to really learn Japanese this time.

My goals are to be able to hold full conversations with my Wife in Japanese, to be able to take a trip to Japan and only use Japanese while I am there, and to be able to carry a conversation with my wife’s family when we end up meeting them again. Eventually, it would be nice to have a job that incorporates using Japanese and traveling back and forth between the US and Japan. It would also be nice to be able to read the piles of Manga that my wife brings home and be able to understand anime without subtitles.

I look forward to getting to know others here better in our quest at becoming more fluent in Japanese. がんばって!!

Welcome! I envy you, you have a practice partner. I to am an avid anime fan and love manga, although I’ve taken a back seat with the translated versions….there just not the same.

I wish you luck in your studies.

Thanks for the welcome and the luck. I found I couldn’t afford purchasing translated manga. So I’ve stopped purchasing it ($10 per volume?..ick). My wife buys manga at used book stores when she goes to work in Japan, so I have a lot of manga that I cant read right now. And having a practice partner is nice, but also adds a little pressure when it is one’s wife. She really wants me to be able to understand Japanese too. Ah well, just means I need to work hard.
