みなさん、こんにちは。
I must have no shame because I’ve been living in Tokyo for 4 years and I’m yet a beginner at Japanese! I think my problem is I have zero discipline, zero faith in myself, and I’m something of a hermit. But I’m on textfugu because I’m sick of myself!!! I adore Japan, I love the sound of Japanese, I’m fascinated by the look of kanji… Time to stop being such a twit and just get to work! Osmosis only goes so far…
Here’s my answer to the first task in S1:
Why are you learning Japanese?
-because I want to have conversations with Japanese people, in order to learn about the culture more deeply, in order to have stronger friendships, in order to build a community.
-because I want to continue living in Japan without being limited by my illiteracy.
-because I want to be successful in my career and need to open more doors to make that possible.
-because I want the chance to date a (non-westernized) Japanese man and to be able to communicate with his circle and family.
-because I want to prove to myself that I can do this, especially since I have failed at learning languages and following through on my goals in the past.
-because I want to take this skill with me to any country I live in in the future. Thanks for reading! Happy studying everyone!
June 28, 2012 at 4:26 am #32380Hello and welcome to TF. You’ve come to the right place to learn Japanese. As your already living there, you have an advantage in picking up the spoken and written language quicker due to being in an immersive environment. You say you’ve been in Tokyo for four years and still a beginner, that’s not uncommon.
From reading your reasons you seem like you want to change that and are fully motivated and commited to learning the language now. Good luck with your studying and feel free to ask any questions here on the forum.

I take it you love kanji and Sakamoto too :)
Thanks very much for the words of encouragement and the warm welcome!
I’m looking forward to having more conversations with you.
