Hi! You can call me あいみ. I’m 23 years old and I live in Montreal with my boyfriend and two cats. This June I’ll be graduating with a BA in Linguistics and will probably start working as an ESL/EFL teacher. What I really want to do is be a Japanese-to-English translator, though. My dream is to translate video games!
My interest in Japanese first came from my lifelong love of JRPGs, and now I also like Jdramas, Japanese music (especially Perfume!), anime and manga and all that good stuff. I took a university course in Japanese 5 years ago, but it didn’t do much for me. I’ve tried studying on my own with RTK (got about 800 in before I couldn’t take it anymore) and using my old Genki textbook. Wanikani is working SO much better for me than RTK (maybe it’s the linguist in me, but I can deal with meaning + image + sound together way better than in isolation) so I decided to pull the trigger and get myself a textfugu subscription. You know, for the new year. I’m pretty sure it’ll work so much better than Genki.
After I graduate I’ll be able to start saving money for a trip to Japan, so that is sort of my short-term goal. Get through Wanikani and Textfugu this year so I can make the most out of a Japan trip (and, of course, so I can play video games before they are localized!)
It’s nice to meet you all!
