Hey everyone, I was going through some lessons in textfugu this weekend and came across the kanji
申
when used as
申し申し
it’s supposed to translate to “hello” on the phone, or もうしもうし. However, when I see this phrase it’s usually just もしもし without the extra う. What’s the deal? Are both uses technically correct?
AnonymousIt’s just an inflection change. It’s similar to a contraction in English.
申し申し(もうしもうし) ー> もしもし
すみません ー> すいません
分からない ー> 分かんない
というのは ー> って

According to my dictionary, 申し申し is an archaism. Not sure why it’s one of the first words that spring to Koichi’s mind to illustrate 申…
Basically, just stick with もしもし.
