So I’m studying the Textfugu Sentences deck in Anki, and I got this question:
一人 じゃありませんでした
———–一人[ひとり] じゃありませんでした
(I) was not aloneThe question I have is I wanted to translate it to “It was not one person.”
From what I’ve been told both are correct, but it depends on context. I can understand how context can change the meaning of a sentence, but does that mean 一人 can be used to refer to yourself in the same way that 私 can?

一人 isn’t referring to the speaker like a pronoun – this is a case of the sentence topic being omitted, since it’d be pretty clear from the context. “Did you go to the shops alone yesterday?” “Not alone.” That sort of thing.
