Yeah we’ve had the same presidents on our bank notes for as long as I can remember, the only thing thats changed over the years is the design and security features. The latest issue of US money looks like this
Our coins though have been changing slightly more frequently than our bills though with the collectible 50 state quarters etc, and now we have American the beautiful quarters
August 17, 2013 at 12:12 pm #41565Don’t worry I am still around :P I don’t think I’ve said it to anyone on here aside from Missing, but from January next year I will stay with a host family in Fukuoka for half a year and study at A Japanese Language school. It’s pretty pricy so I will be pretty busy with work until January ^^;
Whatever time I have to study I have been spending reading or watching videos on this youtube channel. If you want me to I can do the mini lesson, but it seems like you got through it just fine so for now I think I will pass ^^;August 17, 2013 at 7:26 pm #41566Sweet. Be sure to let us know how it goes when the time comes.
Are you preparing for N2 already? Have you done N3 yet? Either way, stop progressing so fast, it’s making me feel bad about how lazy and unmotivated I am :PAugust 18, 2013 at 12:44 am #41568No I have not done N3 yet but I will this winter. The reason I watch the N2 videos is because the explanations are great and it also covers all the grammar you need for N3 as well^^ It doesn’t hurt to learn more than what you need to pass :P
Become a 48group fan and you’ll be motivated once again.August 18, 2013 at 1:23 am #41569I’m still pondering whether or not to do N3 – I’m just concerned that my listening ability will let me down…
August 18, 2013 at 2:24 am #41570Just listen to some old tests and see if they are too hard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MQ5-aauAzgAugust 18, 2013 at 4:08 am #41571Ugh, my listening is so bad, certainly not N3 level anyway. As for the first question, I could definitely make out words from it – it wasn’t *all* gibberish – but I probably couldn’t give you a summary of what was said :S
I know 48 groups are part of why you and missingno15 are doing so well but they’re just not for me.
August 18, 2013 at 5:45 am #41572Then just find something else that will interest you and force you to read and watch loads of Japanese things. I do suggest it not being manga and anime though since that isn’t really natural Japanese.
When you say the first question I assume you actually mean the first question and not the example question^^ I will make an entry to this mini lesson and write out what is said.

August 18, 2013 at 12:52 pm #41574Yeah, my brain kinda switches off when I try to listen…
Either way, I’ve got until the end of September to decide.
August 18, 2013 at 4:29 pm #41575Ok answer time.
1 ロック:少し黙ってろ。口うるさいやつは。。。

19New set of questions.
1. 黙ってろ is an abbreviation of what grammar point? What is the function of that grammar point?
2. In line 4, why does the verb くっつている come after the noun 武器? What purpose does that serve?
3. In line 6, the なadjective COOL modifies the word よう. If it (よう) were to be written in kanji, how would that look like? What purpose does よう serve here and does it have grammar points similar to it? Do the similar grammar points need to be modified in the same way よう does?
4. In line 8, what is 「渡しりゃ」? How often would someone say something like this in a regular conversation (regular meaning japanese to japanese or you to japanese)?
5. In this video, Mark’s favorite member is present. Guess who it is by taking a screenshot and posting it here.
August 18, 2013 at 4:40 pm #41576Also regarding listening, I didn’t practice for N2 at all and it naturally showed on the test. Also, it didn’t help that I didn’t practice the listening section at all so at the time I took the test, it was the very first time I was exposed to the JLPT listening format ^^; Even though listening did end up being my lowest score, I still passed luckily.
August 18, 2013 at 5:17 pm #415771. 黙ってろ is an abbreviation of what grammar point? What is the function of that grammar point?
Abbreviation of 黙っていろ which is the imperative form of ~ている. It’s a command.
2. In line 4, why does the verb くっつている come after the noun 武器? What purpose does that serve?
Actually, it’s before the noun. Makes it a noun-modifying phrase (in this case, modifies it from just “weapons” to “weapons-that-are-attached”).
3. In line 6, the なadjective COOL modifies the word よう. If it (よう) were to be written in kanji, how would that look like?
様. But you wouldn’t write it in kanji.
What purpose does よう serve here and does it have grammar points similar to it? Do the similar grammar points need to be modified in the same way よう does?
Means “seems”. らしい and そう are similar, but yeah, the process of attachment is different. Also, different subtleties of meaning, though I’d have to get my grammar dictionary to give specifics (something like, そう is a conclusion drawn from direct observation, while らしい is a conclusion drawn from something I’ve been told).
Fairly sure there’s at least one other that I’m forgetting.
4. In line 8, what is 「渡しりゃ」?
Colloquial abbreviation of 渡せば, innit?
How often would someone say something like this in a regular conversation (regular meaning japanese to japanese or you to japanese)?
Fairly often. That’s what makes it colloquial.
5. In this video, Mark’s favorite member is present. Guess who it is by taking a screenshot and posting it here.
I was going to post some joke answer here, but iPad’s got no “copy image location” function, sooo… abstain.
And I barely scraped a pass at listening in N5…
August 19, 2013 at 7:20 am #41587@Mark: I actually meant the example question, but yeah, the first proper question also wasn’t easy :P
@missingno15: Eh, I was close enough. Putting 私は instead of 渡しりゃ, I didn’t really think it made sense but I’ve never come across this りゃ thing before.
Also, why did you not practice listening? Did you really think you were that good at it that you didn’t need practice?@Joel: Good answers. As for the よう part, were you maybe thinking of みたい? そう has two different forms – one that attaches to a ます stem or い-adjective stem (e.g. 降りそう, よさそう) and one that is “stuck on the end” of verbs, い-adjectives and states of being. Oh, and there’s also っぽい. I’ve read Tae Kim’s page on the topic so many times but I can never *quite* get the hang of the nuances of all of them.
August 19, 2013 at 7:42 am #41589How often would someone say something like this in a regular conversation (regular meaning japanese to japanese or you to japanese)?
Fairly often. That’s what makes it colloquial.
August 19, 2013 at 12:50 pm #41592I’m going to guess it’s a “tough guy” way of speaking, so it’s not going to be used in everyday conversation much, if at all.
