I’ve been away from these forums for a couple months. Things got hectic and I dropped the ball again on learning. Last night I came back to the site, expecting to see something new. Unfortunately there is nothing.

From what I can gather on the forums Koichi just isn’t updating this anymore. I thought this was an excellent resource and it makes me sad it my drift off into oblivion eventually. I’ve also been reading that after finishing the lessons within Textfugu you will still be at beginner level, is this really the case?

I joined here thinking this would take me further than Jpod101, and not feel as gimmicky. I purchased a membership to Jpod101 a while ago and downloaded everything I could, but after following them for 5-6 months I never saw anything new added beyond what they had and figured they were just milking customers with what they had with no intention of introducing more advance podcasts. Has that changed?

Honestly I just need to get off my bum and start studying. I have Pimsleur, Jpod101 (from a few years ago), and Michel Thomas Japanese. I have several books that have various bits of information and subject matter on the language.

Are there any other resources out there I haven’t listed that are worth a go? I’m interested in learning and want to keep my motivation up but sometimes its hard.

Hope to hear some good recommendations!

I don’t know about recommendations, but I can agree with the update thing. However I will say that I have been away since about December 2011. [My high school offers Japanese through your Junior year.] In that time, the changes have been so immense I barely recognize the place anymore. In fact, I was about to post a topic asking for some briefing about the new stuff.

As far as him continuing to update, I just read his post on the blog about frontend/backend stuff. I’m assuming you’ve read it. If not: Post I decided to comb the comments section to see if he himself had said anything. About 11 days ago, he replied to a few comments that the backend stuff just took a long time, but he had NOT in fact dropped off the face of the planet. As a self-proclaimed procrastinator, I can say there have been several projects which I promised people would not take long at all, and actually took forever.

I understand that it’s been 4 months, but if he’s anything like me, he will finish the updates eventually. Timeliness? Well I don’t know about that, but I don’t think TextFugu is done forever.

4 months since that news post, but it’s now been 9 months without any new content. I can understand why customers would be upset.

I think that part of the problem is that Koichi started on two other website projects with WaniKani and EtoEto, while TextFugu is still incomplete. So he’s working on several sites at once.

Yeah, I believe it has to do with the sites too. Also, its the fact that each of those sites require payment to use once compeleted…..at least WaniKani (I’m not sure about EtoEto). I don’t know about you guys but I don’t have more money to drop on something else, especially when the one I paid for isn’t complete or being updated. What’s to say the new ones will be?

@Rowen: What do you mean “no intention of introducing more advance[d] podcasts”, in regards to Jpod101? The first podcast in their “Upper Intermediate” season 1 was posted in January 2008. If that series is too basic for you, I’m not sure what made you buy TextFugu :S They have a whole range of different levels at Jpod101, and many many podcasts for each. How long ago did you have a subscription?

@Jacqueline: You left December 2011? Has it *really* changed that much? It usually takes him a couple of years to add one lesson, so I’m not sure there’s been *that* much added haha.

As for EtoEto, I’m not sure I want to use it. Thankfully it’ll be free for me, but I’ve lost a lot of faith in Koichi over the years. How long before he abandons it to take on some other hair-brained scheme? It’ll just start getting good then all the content will stop coming and we’ll be left with bugger-all. If he wants to dick around and try out new ideas, he shouldn’t be charging for them until they are finished products; none of this “pay full price now and just hope to god I don’t get bored with it and shaft you all”.

…I guess I’m kinda glad he’s not on the forum in a way: I’d probably be banned by now for always going on about how shit TextFugu is :P Other people agree with me from time to time, but I probably do it the most :S

MisterM, I subbed to Jpod101 around 2 years ago. Never saw anything new added. Its not that things are to basic I just want something that will add content to those that are learning the content offered. Granted I’m still basic, I couldn’t string together more than a few sentences. I seem to understand more that I can speak. I’m an avid Anime fan and usually only watch it in Japanese (granted with English subs). I would love to obtain fluency enough to read Visual Novels, manga and of course watch Anime and Drama’s.

I’m also a nurse by trade and would love to find something for translating that would be along those lines. Its a goal at any rate.

It is so hard to know what to think about the whole situation.
Yes, there are inconsistencies, convoluted explanations, flaws in the website, errors in the examples & mistakes in the grammar teachings.
But on the other-hand, I did get an email from Koichi in early May saying that updates will fix everything in the near future.

I didn’t post here since…I’d guess over a year. I visit once in a while to see if there is new stuff and without much surprise, there is not.

@Rowen : It is true that textfugu level is pretty low. Just explore and see what works for you, could be books like genki, website like Tae Kim, different deck on Anki, writing practice with lang-8, etc.

@Michael : The reason you feel mostly alone is probably because other people who think textfugu became shit are long gone(like me).

@vanandrew : Not so hard in fact. Yes, there are all the things you say, which is bad. Plus, about 0 deadline respected in 2 years. But on the other hand, you did get an email that was saying what you wanted to hear :P

So, since a lot of you have moved on what are YOU using now? Besides textfugu, and why? Are there any other communities out there worth joining?

(Heck, I might drum up my own forum/blog site for people to join and congregate in. Sharing learning experiences and tips and hints. I ran a forum for 3 years for RPGing and I’m no old hat.)

@Rowen: Does it matter if Jpod101 add any new content though? They’ve got so much as it is, it would take a long, long to actually get through all of it :D

Also, I’d recommend watching those Japanese anime with Japanese subtitles instead, if you can. I’ve not tried it yet myself (I don’t really watch anime but I mean with other TV too) but I’ve heard it’s a lot more effective – if you’ve got English subtitles, your brain is drawn to the English and you’ll be less likely to take in the Japanese being spoken. Still pretty difficult, though it could fun to try, see how much you can understand :D I keep meaning to do this with a series called “Densha Otoko”, supposed to be pretty good.

@Vanandrew: Yeah, Koichi says a lot of things. He also told me he planned to finish the core content of TextFugu (6 whole seasons to start but hopefully add another few for more advanced stuff if he had the chance, which under the new system of shorter seasons would be around 12 up to maybe 16 respectively) by… I think his first estimate was around the end of 2011 (I know, right?). And back when he used to update more often and was more actually *involved* with his customers and the community, he’d frequently keep pushing back the dates for when stuff would be done. If a lesson was to be up “this Wednesday”, you can bet your ass he’d keep pushing it back till it finally came on the Friday of the next week. Don’t forget numerous promises of “5 new Tofugu videos every week”, “a few new Tofugu videos every week”, “one new Tofugu video every week” – don’t get me wrong, those videos were usually pretty good, it’s just that those promises were obviously going to fail. And then there was the whole “Cat Island” section of his TofuguTV series that didn’t get done for god knows how long. And then there was the experiment he was supposed to do regarding learning Japanese in your sleep: instead of making post explaining that it didn’t come to anything (or that he couldn’t be bothered), I only found out what happened to it after asking him about it directly in an unrelated email.

@Reiden: Welcome back haha. Did you used to use a different avatar? I can kinda remember the username but something seems a bit off :P Maybe I’m thinking of someone else…

@Rowen (again): As for communities worth joining, this one! :D As much as I moan about TextFugu as a whole, this part is pretty good ;) I caught up with the material in TextFugu (and thus stopped using it) about a little under 2 years ago maybe; besides a couple of long(ish)-term absences, I’ve stayed on this forum ever since :D Though it may not be the best forum from a technical stand-point, there are some pretty decent people here, even though a lot of the regulars from when I first started don’t really come here much (or at all) any more.

@Rowen : For the most part, I use Anki, mostly with my own cards that I create. I read manga and website related to them. I wouldn’t recommand my methods since I don’t really put much effort in speaking/writing.

@Michael : I didn’t have any avatar, I had the default one(like Rowen). I wouldn’t say “welcome back” since I won’t be more active that I was in the last year. :)

Man, I really wish Koichi did update this site regularly. I do still to intend to finish all of the lessons I can learn here first, then go onwards. It is awesome that he is making WaniKani and EtoEto, but he really should reinforce the beginning where most people start.

@Mr – I’m glad to see you’ve kept a list! I’ve got my own – it’s pretty much everything I’ve posted while during the lessons.

What’s this alleged EtoEto thing people are talking about?

    #41241

@vanandrew: Oh, that’s not a complete list, just what I could think of off the top of my head ;)

Do you remember him mentioning something about a project codenamed “Kuma”? EtoEto seems to be the new name for that. It was a bunch of more intermediate content that he was going to add to TextFugu but decided he could make more money from it if he made it a separate thing :P I think it’s free for current TextFugu lifetime members though. http://etoeto.com/ for more details. It looks good, but like I said I’m a bit apprehensive.

Ah, yes I remember hearing about “Kuma”. Very exciting.
