Does he even check these forums any more? I feel like Koichi has fallen off the face of the earth, or perhaps is focusing on WaniKani because it costs more, is arguably easier, and there is a LOT of work in this page waiting to be done. Such a shame, the potential was so great here, could be the best resource for beginners, but I am starting to feel more and more ripped off the further I go, the emptier it is.
July 17, 2013 at 10:39 pm #41166I believe that from the beginning TF is described as “Japanese The Hard Way”. It was never meant to easy.

August 7, 2013 at 4:33 pm #41412Has anyone used the Wanikani site? I was considering it before, but seeing the state of this site I am a little worried I am throwing money at another alpha-version.
August 7, 2013 at 8:30 pm #41414WK is active and updated often, and the top member always has new stuff to learn (they stay ahead of him by releasing new stuff in time)
I recommend it :D
=^..^=August 8, 2013 at 5:58 am #41421@zeldaskitten: “active and updated often” are words I’d say described TextFugu back when I started, and look at it now :P Not that you can be *100%* sure it’ll go the same way, but it’s something to be wary of at least. I guess he’s got Viet to work on it too though; when Hashi was hired, he did do a little here on TextFugu but he was mostly working on writing for Tofugu, I think. Still, I’d rather they finish something before they release it for a change – being in alpha for years is always going to be risky.
August 8, 2013 at 3:51 pm #41435Uh oh, conflicting reports!!
The first stuff looks good, I guess he is moving away from Anki as people can theoretically download his work and share it with everyone (so it is harder to show value-added for signing up).
That is fine, but unless it is thorough, and is on the way to having 1500-2000 kanji, fully developed with vocab, I don’t really want to plonk down 40-80 bucks a year for something half-baked. Anyone else done a lot with this?

Well, WK has been up for over a year and it’s still going strong. Also, The amount of content is less than TF would be, I think, so it’s actually almost done, as far as the basic lessons are concerned. They say about 50 levels is what there will be when it’s complete and they’ve got up to the mid 40′s made already. Of course there’s still much work to do with constant improvements and stuff.. (and adding new features..) But I would definitely say that WK is way closer to being ‘finished’ than TF is. I’m sure some of the reasons for this are that:
it’s all one format, and one thing being learned, which makes it easier to make.
Viet is on top of his game
kanji is easier to teach since ‘grammar’ is much more abstract and complex where kanji is one specific type of thing you’re learningIn general, WK just has a great vibe, and things are going well over there. I really can’t see it having the same issues as TF since it’s close to complete already and they’ve kept their word so far about staying ahead of the highest level user.
=^..^=August 10, 2013 at 3:20 am #41472Well then, that sounds all right :P If I could be bothered learning kanji readings, I might just have tried it haha.

Do you mean that you only learn how to pronounce words, and not the common readings for individual kanji? just curious :D
=^..^=August 10, 2013 at 4:34 pm #41481I just learn how to pronounce each word as I see it. After learning a few words with that kanji in it, the reading just kinda follows suit (so 電車、自転車、車道 tells me that 車 can be read しゃ; to be fair, all it takes is one instance, but more of them helps). I did learn the readings from TextFugu of everything up to… the beginning of 4-stroke maybe? That’s all we had back then ;_; I did RTK after that though, so I’ve got the writing of them down basically fine.
August 13, 2013 at 7:25 pm #41505I like wanikani a lot and it is definitely closer to complete than than TF but I will say that the site has some overlapping vocab like 入場 and 入口 for example are both called begining and 作家 and 作者 are both author or writter. Since there are currently no example sentences it is up to you to figure out the context, though the QK community I think has a chrome extension for them along with other useful API based ad dons. I would also say, to end on a positive note, that they have a active forum that includes much more than just several introductions.
So in summation,I personally recommend it and am sorry for the lengthy post.
