Just finished Section 1 of TextFugu. I spent about 30 hours. Was that too fast? I love this approach to learning. Sure beats Rosetta, which I tried a few years ago and gave up after a couple weeks. I’m also part-hawaiian and studied that at the local university (as a foreign language requirement). So I’ve had some previous language learning. As a curious and rascal child I did spend some time with by grandmother (a nisei) where I learned such words as “abunai, bakatare, bachi” etc. She was the sweetest lady I’ve ever known. We still maintain some connection to her lifestyle by practicing some of the teachings of Kobo Daishi. We finally made the decision to take a trip to Japan in March 2016, so I’m glad I found TextFugu and hope to be able to have some “immersive” language learning there. Hope I’ll be able to read food menus by that time too, cause I’m thinking FOOD!

Welcome! It’s great that you’re going to be able to visit Japan. Made any itinerary plans yet? Going to visit any of the major Kobo Daishi sites, like Koya-san, or the 88 temples in Shikoku?

    Hi Joel,
We are taking an escorted tour out of Honolulu. Just visiting some main sites and cities. We won’t have much time to deviate from the schedule, but we will be in the Kobe/Osaka/Nara area for a few days, so if we get a chance we may go to Mount Koya. Hopefully we can also visit temples in Shikoku.

Koya-san’s just a day-trip out of Osaka, and it’s well worth doing, I reckon. I went there for a day on my trip, five years ago…

A day-trip may be workable. I’ll look into it. Thanks.
