Hey. It took me a long time to figure out how to sink my Android version of Anki with my computer version but a few hours of internet searches and a little Dropbox trickery later I was successful.
However….I don’t know if this is a universal issue that can be solved or something that I will have to live with but I cannot play the sound files for the Tofugu flash cards. I have checked the files directly in Dropbox and they play there but not in AnkiDroid. I have also checked the automatically play sounds box. Is there anything that anyone can recommend to fix this. Its just I would get so much more vocab studying done if I could use Anki on the go.
Please help.
July 4, 2011 at 5:55 am #13606Wounldn’t know myself. I only use my media-less decks on my android so syncing is super easy but obviously no media :P
Maybe someone has done it.
July 7, 2011 at 10:06 am #13806I had this problem as well.
Open Anki on your desktop, open the deck you’re using, click on Tools->Advanced and then Check Database and Check Media Database. After that, sync.
That fixed my issue.
July 17, 2011 at 11:04 pm #14227Really appreciate the advice but no joy. Do you have any other suggestions??
July 18, 2011 at 8:34 am #14230Hm. Did you follow the guide on AnkiWeb’s site?
July 18, 2011 at 6:11 pm #14243I did follow that guide. That’s how I got the flashcards to work. I’ve been to scared to ask how to make it work on the anki forums as all people seem to get back is technobabble and although I’m not computer illiterate technobabble intimidates me.
I checked the cards on AnkiWeb and they play the sound there. also when I synced the cards on AnkiDroid I got a message that said “downloading media 0/43″ or of a similar ilk. It never seemed to go up through the numbers as it would if it was downloading however there is no error message. Is it possible that my SD card isn’t high enough capacity or something??
Sorry for sucking at AnkiDroid

See, I was having an error message come up when I was downloading media #13. Doing what I said above fixed my issue, but it sounds like yours isn’t even attempting to download.
Check maybe the manual part of the link I posted?
July 20, 2011 at 7:57 am #14295Do you know which version of Ankidroid you’re using?
(The betas and alphas and experimental versions are out and I have the newest beta because by the gods, I wanted my decks in alphabetical order. If you get a beta version, it could be a bug that’s been fixed.)Have you tried uninstalling Ankidroid then reinstalling and copying your .anki file and .media folder over?
(I don’t have an account and thus didn’t sync my desktop and Droid versions. If you are having trouble and you don’t care about your Droid not keeping track of what you do on your desktop, I’d just not sync or I’d use the browser and that Web version that accesses their server.)Did you rename the .anki file at some point?
(If it doesn’t share the exact name with the .media file then it won’t access it.)EDIT: Because I’m anal.

July 24, 2011 at 11:03 pm #14552Thank you so much for your advice. I have done all of the above before and it never worked.
But you make a point about renaming the files…I had the deck under a different name and maybe wires got crossed somewhere. This time it works. I made sure all the files kept their original names and that before I started using the decks on my android I made sure to “download missing media” and it worked by some miricle. I’m not sure what did it but it works and I have installed three decks with sound!!! Words do not express how happy this makes me. I am a little anal and that the sound wasn’t working was bugging me!
Thanks to all you folks for your help. I really appreciate it.

August 6, 2011 at 9:13 am #15137I have a separate question about ankidroid. It’s about using tags.. I just can’t seem to figure it out! I got it working on my computer fine, but it seems as though the options just don’t exist on mobile, which is super sad. I hardly ever use anki on my pc after all, and I would LOVE to study these ultimate lists the proper way. Has anyone had success using tags in ankidroid??
=^..^=August 6, 2011 at 12:43 pm #15140ugh nevermind i finally figured it out :P

Hello all,
i had the same issue.
Even if you did everything right (setting up dropbox and so on), it might not download the media files.
My solution was No.1:
In order to trigger media download:
1) The best way is to answer at least one card from the deck and then use “Sync All”. This causes a proper media download as expected with all the correct dialog boxes.
OR
2) Alternatively, click on the deck then Sync that deck individually. It feels like AnkiDroid then crashes, as it displays some blank screens, but it’s only a temporary hang until the media finishes downloading. I think there is then a brief popup screen saying that media was downloaded, but there are definitely some missing UI elements here that should indicate what is happening.
OR
3) Apparently, as in issue 612 above, manually creating the deck’s .media directory before downloading the deck will cause media to be correctly downloaded on the first try.I found the stuff above here:
https://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=405Thank you everyone for this thread, because this lead me to the other thread and solved my problem.
I hope someone with the same problem will find this. :DBest regards, Lars
