I tried to find the answer in these forum, but I haven’t notice anyone posted this problem.
Maybe I’m doing something wrong (idiotic I can be), but after importing up to 20 Anki desks from TextFugu, I decided the media has to be fixed, considering I’m using my iPhone a lot during commuting to work.
Basically I can sync everything fine on Anki website and Anki desktop version on my Mac Laptop. But when I sync it with my iPhone, the media doesn’t download, it says “Missing Media – You have a media URL set, but i wasn’t able to download”. I can still sync and use the desk perfectly, but the media doesn’t work, because it’s not downloaded.
I have Dropbox setup on my Mac, and the media can be played via Anki website. So….. it seems like a iPhone Anki problem. Anyone else encountered the same problem as me?
Thanks in advance.
.tonyMay 17, 2012 at 9:53 am #30904Hmm, I seem to remember someone saying you need to make an Anki media folder on your phone in order for the media to play. That might have been for Android phones, but it could work for iPhone too. I may be wrong but I’ll see if I can dig up the thread where I read that.
May 17, 2012 at 10:10 am #30906Hello Kanjiman8!
When I first started, I managed to sync it via iTunes for the first few desks. But now it doesn’t work. Hmm… Absolutely no idea what to do.
May 17, 2012 at 5:03 pm #30914I couldn’t get it to sync properly via dropbox, so I can’t help you there. What I do is just connect my device to the PC, and copy the media files over manually into the .media folder.
Alternatively, for Textfugu decks I download them on my device and unzip them straight into the folder.
May 17, 2012 at 6:10 pm #30917Because you’re using Dropbox (and I assume you have selected ‘Keep media in Dropbox’ option on the media pulldown in Preferences, Basic tab with the media stored in a Public Dropbox subfolder) it sounds like the media database needs to be checked and rebuilt.
Make sure that Anki and Dropbox have finished their sync.
After that go into Tools>Advanced>Check Media Database.
It may report no errors but this check rebuilds the database. Then go into Tools>Advanced>Check Database
Same thing here, it rebuilds the database.Next you’ll sync by going to File>Sync
On the device I suggest deleting the deck and redownloading it from Anki. The media should download once the deck has been downloaded. Just syncing should work the same and download the media on sync but I prefer to start with a clean start.

@ ロブ
I will try later tonight, and post back if it works or not. Thank you!!May 17, 2012 at 8:36 pm #30923I had issues getting it to work reliably too, now I just use iKnow instead, works way better across devices. Wish I knew about it before paying like $25 for Anki.
May 17, 2012 at 10:15 pm #30924Oh yes, iKnow is an excellent app. Funny enough I actually went back to iKnow early this morning.
I haven’t paid for the monthly subscription yet, kinda pricey. I’m just concentrating TextFugu, and maybe join a weekend class very soon.
talk about apps. Try the “free for now” i-Sokki Japanese. iKnow is better, but at least i-Sokki is free. :)

Your method works!!
Thanks!!! Now I can enjoy Anki again.
It’s strange that ‘Check Media Database’ & ‘Check Database’ says it doesn’t have any errors, but yet is made it sync! Awesome!!
thanks a bunch!!! :DMay 31, 2012 at 7:34 am #31298How do I get to tools-advanced? I can’t seem to find it on the ipad app (media is working fine for me on iphone, not ipad)
May 31, 2012 at 7:47 am #31299Okay, ignore me, it seems to be working now. Magic. I say it is the hivemind here at work,or something.
