Hi forums I’m Jack, I’ve always been fascinated with Japan and finally ended up visiting a few months ago. I’ve been trying to find the right way to learn Japanese and think I’ve found it! I have to study Arabic as well, so don’t know how I’ll manage both :p

Does anyone have any tips or books that are good to read in conjunction with Textfugu and how many Kanji are learnt through the 8 seasons?

Welcome! They say the three hardest languages to learn in the world are English, Japanese and Arabic, so good luck with that. On the plus side, you’ve already managed English. =P

For books that are good to read, I’ve been studying using Japanese for Busy People, and also reading the Dictionary of (Basic/Intermediate/Advaced) Japanese Grammar from cover to cover. Still in the middle of Intermediate, though. Another idea for when you start to get more proficient is to just get a light novel or manga or children’s book, and read that.

As for kanji, counting what’s on this page gives me 399. Plus an ellipsis – not too sure what that’s supposed to represent.

@Joel: How are you using the grammar dictionary? Are you simply just reading through and hoping something sticks? Or do you make flash cards, or come up with sentences, or… something else, I dunno? When it’s come to grammar in the past, my approach has kinda been the first one, but I’m not sure if it’s really the most effective.

Reading it, yes. Using the example sentences for practice by covering over the translation and trying to read it. It’s not, I’ll admit, flawless – but generally I’ve at least memorised that such grammar structures exist (even if I can’t recall the formation rules) meaning I can more quickly look it up later. Haven’t really been doing flash cards (or any practice at all) as much as I ought…
