Hello! I’m finishing up season 2 of textfugu right now, but I’m a little confused about one of the sentences on the practice page. It seems like there have a been a few questions recently about pronunciation of kanji, and I’m sure a lot of the concepts clear up over time. However, I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. So the sentence is: 十は七じゃありません. On the kanji page for 十, it explains that for numbers, the on’yomi reading is often used if it’s just the kanji by itself. But when I listen to the pronunciation of this sentence, 七 is pronounced ‘nana’ which is the kun’yomi pronunciation. Is this just an exception, or am I not understanding something? Thanks in advance for your help!

七 is a weird one in that its readings tend to be fairly interchangeable.

四 as well, to a lesser extent.

I hope this will be covered in Koichi’s lessons soon….I swear, I’ve heard this question asked around 30 to 40 times…

You’re not wrong, Tsetycoon. Look at my first post in this thread: http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/onyomi-vs-kunyomi-the-question-as-old-as-time/

A possibly non-exhaustive list of all the various yomi threads. That was a year ago too, I’m betting the number has quadrupled by now :P

…and as I’m typing this, I just realise you actually commented in that thread already XD “This question has been asked literally hundreds of times!” :D Still, it’s a useful link regardless.
