I saw some threads discussing using mangas and Nintendo DS games for learning purposes, which is awesome. My only problem is that I seem to be having trouble finding where to purchase these things in Japanese. I found Kanji Sonomama on eBay… for $90… OUCH.
So I suppose what I’m getting at is what are your online resources for buying things in Japanese?
Good place to buy Japanese text Manga?
Want to sell me your used Japanese DS games?:D
October 17, 2011 at 7:09 am #19316Check the games you already have installed on your PC, some of them are likely to have full support for japanese. I like to play shogun 2, but that is only has voice over Japanese, so I don’t learn much if any from that. Other than that I play yet it moves on Japanese
Here is a screenshot, no furigana, but thankfully there is alot of katakana :P

October 18, 2011 at 7:07 am #19354Check out yesasia.com. Japanese games might not be cheap there, but definitely cheapter than 90$. They also have manga and books. And free international shipping if you buy stuff for over 39$ iirc (that’s eligible for free international shipping).

if you’re gonna go for yesasia, i applaud you for taking the option of waiting an entire month for your order to arriveOctober 18, 2011 at 10:59 pm #19480YesAsia even if you get free shipping, is more expensive than BK1 (they only charge the RRP on the back) and is based in China so don’t have anywhere near as big as range.
So I’ll vouch for BK1 as well. Oh and they pack very thoroughly.

October 18, 2011 at 11:11 pm #19483Only problem with BK1 if your a beginner like me you cant read the site at all
October 19, 2011 at 12:07 am #19487It’s Rikaichannable (not a good habit though) if you’re not too worried about dealing with money and having no idea whats going on :P
October 19, 2011 at 3:29 am #19490I don’t even know all of the Hirigana yet… only about half…. so ya I realllly cant read the site XD
October 19, 2011 at 3:49 am #19493If you can’t navigate BK1 with the aid of rikaichan, you probably aren’t going to get much use out the native Japanese material you would buy from there :)
Oh, and I love BK1′s packaging. It just seems so nicely packed :)

October 19, 2011 at 7:02 am #19495Thank you so much everyone, I appreciate the help! I don’t think BK1 will be too terrible to navigate. So now I feel that I’ve got books/ manga covered.
But I guess games are a different story? I suppose I’ll just stick to scouring eBay… Maybe some gamer forums would have more insight or resources as how to get a fairly priced jdm video game…?October 19, 2011 at 8:05 am #19498If you have a PS3 changing the system language will impact some games, changing them to Japanese or so. Also if you make a Japanese PSN account you can easily purchase games from the Japanese store using pre-paid cards, or just download demos and what not.
It sucks that the 3DS isn’t region free. I’m just gonna wait for the PS Vita and import some games for that instead now.

October 19, 2011 at 11:41 am #19510I personally prefer Nintendo as the systems I have are Super, 64, GC, GB and DS Lite. I have the Japanese version of Kirby Super Star for SuperFamicom (which was actually super cheap on eBay.. like $5 shipped or something) And will work on USDM SNES if you clip 2 little tabs on the inside where you insert the cartridge. I see Super Famiocom games in used game stores for fair prices sometimes (5$-20$ depending on how rare/cool/good the game was). I was just looking for something for my handheld system that wasn’t going to cost a bunch. I don’t mind waiting because that just gives my Japanese more time to improve upon itself (the ultimate goal here XD).
I am not opposed to computer games, but the only thing I have other than internet access on work computers is my netbook. Its cheap, tiny, and probably not the best gaming platform, and I am not particularly intersted in testing it’s ability.
Anyway, I really appreciate the info! :D
~~~~~EDIT
Found someplace interesting..
http://www.whiterabbitpress.com <— Anyone had experience/ heard of this place?As far as DS games are concerend they are the cheapest for "New" at 54.50 for both Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten and Tadashii Kanji Kakitori-kun – Kanken Taisaku, I created a cart and as far as Central Missouri (and probably the entire Midwest shipping zone) the rates are as follows:
2-4 weeks (no tracking number): $4.00
About 1 week (no tracking number): $6.80
EMS 3-5 days (tracking number): $14.12Not so bad, even if you choose the 1 week option the price is still considerably (about $10) lower than what I've seen recently on eBay/ Amazon. They also had some other Japanese DS games I haven't heard of yet for ranging from $42-$48. Their clean and appealing site as well as being able to use PayPal is enough for me to trust them. Not to mention it's in English, for those of you not able/ willing to use Rikaichan/kun.
I hope this information is helpful!
October 21, 2011 at 8:36 am #19578I found this two-part review helpful in making my mind up about my recent purchase.
Just in case I am not the only one that was on the fence about Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten or Tadashii Kanji Kakitori-kun – Kanken Taisaku.
