Here is where we can post our goals in concrete and measurable (ish) forms.
For me, one of the greatest things I have taken away from this community, is the community itself! (Go figure)
But in all honesty, this forum and group of amazing individuals have made me more accountable for my own decisions regarding when and how much/hard I study.I want to be open, clear and honest about my goals and I think it is beneficial for us to state them loud and clear.
Most of us talk about or goal and dream of what we want to do once we learn and can speak/understand Japanese, but without many smaller measurable goals along the way, the path can seem too long and treacherous. Your goals can be related to the seasons here, completing a text book on your own, finishing anki decks, learning a set # of vocab or kanji… anything you want. But ideally, something you can measure and hold yourself accountable for.
My goal is to keep up to date with my Anki every single day and to pass the JLPT N3 test this December. On top of that, I want to learn and understand the keigo and teinei (polite) forms of speech by December as well.
Let’s hear what everyone else wants to accomplish!
September 30, 2011 at 7:50 am #18358Great Idea:)
I have 4 goals
- I want to keep studying my anki decks everyday
- I want to finish season 4 before my holiday is over(24. october)
- I want to finish all TextFugu material by the end of this year(including anything that gets updated)
- Listen to more Japense, that be podcasts music or w/e :)GL to everyone else
September 30, 2011 at 8:08 am #18359Cool idea, heres my list
1.Write on Lang-8 everyday
2.Know 1000 kanji by December (I know about 300-400, 80 or so days, less than ten a day)
3.LISTEN TO MORE JAPANESE!
4.Be able to communicate with the people I meet when I go to Japan in April
5.Start using Gakuu, get a lifetime textfugu accountIf I do 4 of these, I’ll be happy!
Goodluck to everyone (or should I say かんばってください?)
September 30, 2011 at 9:09 am #18370一:「Core 2000」と「Core 6000」の言葉を習い終わるつもりです。
1. I plan to finish Core 2000 (then 6000) by… god knows when! Been so busy with uni work that I haven’t added any new words in months! :O
Once my Anki and Koohii cards are finished for the day, I WILL add some more Core 2000 – got the whole weekend! :D(Yeah, I gave up on trying to post in Japanese haha)
2. …I’m not sure about any other plans at the moment. Finish “A Basic Guide to Japanese Particles” or whatever it’s called, maybe? And maybe finish Kanzen Master 3kyuu too? Oh, and I still need to read Japanese for College Students, once it’s returned to the library. And Japanese for Busy People II and/or III. And maybe a book on common Japanese idioms. So many books!! XD
3. Start parallel-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone! :D But only once I’ve completed the first two goals.
4. Converse with ANY Japanese person for at least a few minutes without faltering ;)
I have no time-frame for these goals; they are more a “to-do list” :)
September 30, 2011 at 10:15 am #18396Great idea! :)
My weakest area right now (other than speaking) is writing my own sentences. I comprehend a LOT more than I can produce. So my goal:
Post at least twice per week on Lang-8. At least.
September 30, 2011 at 10:36 am #18401I have only just finished with Season 1, but I would like to….
1. Continue at the pace of AT LEAST 1 chapter per day, if not more (but not too many!)
2. Practice Anki everyday!
3. I would really like to start practicing speaking in person (even though I can’t say much).. so perhaps a goal is to find a Japanese friend…. I know they’re around here somewhere… ( > , > )Best of luck to everyone on their goals! I noticed there was some “Listen to Japanese” Luckily for me I already watch a bunch of subbed anime’s, as well as a couple of Japanese bands. So it’s always fun for me to go back once in a while to see how much more of it I can understand then before.
September 30, 2011 at 11:13 am #18407Note to larisajane : don’t base the time of the season 1 chapter for other season. Some chapter need time to really understand and practice and by adding the vocabs list + the Kanji it is a lot to do 1/day, just saying ^^
my goals now are :
1) Finishing textfugu vocab list by the end of october
2) Building up a big list of my own that I find in the wild mostly during november and december.
3) Coming back to Textfugu and reviewing some chapters/finishing up to were it is, January
4) Starting to read / write actively, website, manga, penpal, lang-8 and watching anime and shows without subtitles1-4) all while reviewing with Anki and listening to podcast/radio/music on regular basis.
September 30, 2011 at 12:26 pm #18426That should be “All About Particles” not “A Basic Guide…”
@winterpromise31: You’ll *always* understand more than you can produce: it’s only natural. Even in English (assuming that’s your native), it’ll probably the same.
September 30, 2011 at 12:45 pm #18428Michael, good point. But my production level still feels around season 2 of Textfugu whereas my comprehension level is much higher. I need to be practicing the grammar I’m learning that day, not just absorbing it. :P Off topic a tiny bit – I have an Amazon credit and want to order a textbook/grammar guide. What would you recommend if I can only get one of the list you mentioned? I know they are all good books but I only have $35!
September 30, 2011 at 5:24 pm #18505-Finish RTK by December!
-Anki reviews, but that’s kinda implied.
-Also implied, immersion.I’m so easy on myself. I’ll probably finish a lot sooner than December (only 800ish to go), but finishing before a deadline is like a head start to me… Maybe you know the feeling?
September 30, 2011 at 5:30 pm #18506Spend a bit more that that and get ‘A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar’ by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui.
Along with the Intermediate and Advanced Dictionaries it should be required owning.
October 1, 2011 at 2:08 am #18541Nice post KiaiFighter ^^
My goals aren’t much different than those posted before but… Here they go :)
-Write in lang-8 at least once or twice a week
-Read everyday, making me learn kanji along with that
-Being able to produce my own kinda complex sentences (writing and speaking) without being terribly slow. Also as Armando said, some things are implied (Anki reviews…)
Btw~ The book you recommended Elenkis, looks quite good. I hope I can get my hands on it, I don’t know if it’s available here in Spain.
October 1, 2011 at 12:21 pm #18550- get proficient in conversation Japanese before 名無しさん leaves this december
- get back on to learning all the books from my 日本語スピードマスターStandard 2400 and words in general through Anki
- be able to read news reports on yahoo.jp
- get and read a novel (current objective is 通話電車)
- not be a beginnerBtw way, those who plan on using lang-8.com everyday, send me your links to your accounts through missingno15@gmail.com
I need something that will humor me for about 10-15 minutes of my day
October 1, 2011 at 2:10 pm #18553Haha will do once I get around to starting :P I was thinking of getting through s5 before starting… I bet it will be hilarious xD
October 1, 2011 at 6:28 pm #18555@winterpromise31: Hmmm… I’d say it’d be best not to get the dictionary of grammar mentioned before: mostly romaji, if I recall correctly, and I just found it to be not that useful. Maybe I’m wrong though, it’s been a while since i’ve had a look at it. You should probably go for the “All About Particles” book – I’ve found it’s really helped and it’s been recommended by Mr. AJATT too :D Although there are plenty of other good books out there, like “Kanzen Master” – go over to Google Books and see if you can get a preview of some of them :) I’m not sure if my library actually has the 2nd or 3rd volumes of Japanese for College Students, but if they do they’ve been checked out anyway, so I picked up Japanese for Busy People II and III (not number 1 though because it said it was a “reference copy only”, and tbh, it looked really too basic XD).
Even though I’ve got those other books to read on my to-do list, think I’ll just try and get through Japanese for Busy People II and III first – they seem quite good :) Read them while doing my Core 6000, of course ;) Gotta have vocab.
