This is for all you Anki specialists. I’m new to TextFugu (and Anki) and want to use Koichi’s hiragana deck in a specific way: I want the cards, in sets of 5, to come up in order they are on the hiragana chart (a-series, then k-series, then s-series, etc.), but to be randomized within those sets, preferably each time through (so I might get i-o-a-e-u first time through, then get a-u-e-i-o next time through). Can anyone tell me how to do that? I’ve tried the Anki help, but it isn’t very helpful.
I also want to restart the study sequence in Anki once it’s configured the way I want (if possible). Can someone tell me how to do THAT? I’ve tried various ways but those same randomized cards keep coming back up. Thanks very much! I AM having fun!

July 30, 2011 at 8:38 pm #14782I think you could get that done using tagging and cram mode. Go through and tag the cards in each series using the deck browser. That will give you separate groups to work with.
Then use the deck browser to select all the cards in a given series, and create a cram session. Choose to see the cards in random order.

Welcome to TextFugu! ^^
August 18, 2011 at 4:23 pm #15881did you get this working the way you wanted? jkl’s suggestion sounds pretty good.
as for resetting the deck deck once you’ve got it the way you want it, if you select all the cards in the card browser then you can choose reschedule from the actions menu, and reschedule them all as new cards.
August 21, 2011 at 12:14 pm #16007Nope, insanimal, I didn’t (but thanks for asking) – I’ve pretty much given up on Anki as a resource because it simply doesn’t customize well; it’s the first, and so far only, TF-recommended resource I don’t find myself able to use. That’s okay, though – I’m using White Rabbit’s hard copy flashcards (which allow me to do EXACTLY what I want to do), and several other resources.
One thing I had hopes for that Anki doesn’t allow, is the ability to create a ‘deck’ using ‘cards’ from other decks. I could easily build a deck of ten starter cards, then add 5 more at a time from Koichi’s deck. That would seem to be pretty basic functionality (building a deck from scratch is WAY too complex); I’m sorry Anki doesn’t seem to allow this (if I’m wrong in this, please let me know).

August 22, 2011 at 6:49 am #16037@J Center: You could transfer cards from deck to another, it’s possible. Tag the card/s you want to extract, Export them (specifying which cards by the tag you gave them), Import them to the second deck.
While it may not be able to carry your VERY specific needs, don’t give up on Anki – it’s still reasonably customisable and good for pretty much everything else.
Can I ask, why is it that you want this setup of groups of kana cards? Why not just do them ALL randomly at once? Much better for learning that way. I guess it just doesn’t make any sense to me, sorry haha
