Danny Choo wrote a great article about how he came to know Japan and how it changed his life. Its a long read but its really great, and it puts things into perspective.
Some people I knew assumed he came from a well off background :P

June 6, 2011 at 8:34 am #12141I’ve spent the last 1 hour and 30 minutes reading articles, fan fictions and blog posts, so I’ll spend the time to read it once my brain is ready for more information. I’m interested.
June 6, 2011 at 8:56 am #12142That looks interesting *_* I’ll certainly give it a read later too.
Somewhat related question: do Koichi and Danny Choo know/met each other? I mean, both are quite important internet figures in making the Japanese culture and sub-cultures more known to the world~
June 6, 2011 at 10:12 am #12151I don’t think Koichi has met Danny.

AnonymousYeah was an interesting post, nothing he hasn’t already said in others though.
June 6, 2011 at 7:36 pm #12181Hes still going to compile all his japanese learning stuff into a post, and he hasnt talked a lot about his upbringing in depth.
Its funny to see how similar his methods were to AJATT, but really, its just obsession, the best tool for learning.
June 7, 2011 at 11:28 am #12208Holy cow that guy has one heck of a past. I didn’t read everything but he sure is a dedicated hard worker. It looks like all his hard work is starting to pay off. We all could benefit from reading his biography.
June 8, 2011 at 3:18 am #12237I spent about 2 hours reading that last night (I’m ill so I have time to waste) and it was an extremely interesting yet somewhat inspiring post to read.
I’m looking forward to his future posts.
June 8, 2011 at 4:57 am #12238@Winter: I’m not sure if you’ve heard of him before? Hes actually been posting for a very long time now and is extremely popular worldwide. Thats why I found it so inspiring, because hes done so well all by his own work, including learning Japanese, a lot of chinese and korean as well.
June 8, 2011 at 11:40 am #12259Oh, I have heard of him before many times but I never really bothered to read any of his posts or anything.
June 9, 2011 at 1:47 am #12321WOW! What an inspiring post. I have to admit, I hadn’t actually heard of him as I’ve been living under a rock the last few years! I have now, though, And feel inspired to go and study hard…
I like what he says about leaving your comfort zone… ‘the comfort zone’ is a very nice, safe place, but it ain’t going to help you achieve your ambitions in life. I like Danny’s philosophy
^_^June 9, 2011 at 11:02 am #12338So inspiring! It makes me think, if he could do it (learn Japanese, go to Japan) back then (no access to internet, at least, not lately), not as many learning options, then I can do it. Plus earning that kind of money is like a dream come true! I can imagine my self with an M18x Alienware Laptop, a medium sized room (not too big not too small… like those rich people apartments), little anime figurines of Death Note/other animes on my desk, an Ibanez guitar with who knows what so long as it sounds awesome… I could go on but, moral of the story:
If you want something, try hard and you will get it.
June 13, 2011 at 7:36 pm #12604alright, now that I read this autobiographical post again, Danny Choo has gained my utmost respect.
AND HOLY SH!T, I DIDN’T KNOW THAT HE WAS THE SON OF >THE< JIMMY CHOO
June 13, 2011 at 11:04 pm #12612Neither did I, Missing.
July 11, 2011 at 5:32 pm #13914I ‘met’ Danny Choo last week! He was a translator/guest at anime expo 2011. He was reaaaallly funny and my favorite translator. At one point — he was making baby noises! lol. Judging by the responses, sounds like he’s had an interesting life story. off to read the link
