Hello. How are you all today?
I apologize if this question is a bit stupid, but, could you please tell me the difference between the two, if there is one? Little things like an extra character make me go insane if I don’t know their purpose. ;_; They both mean evening, right? Why is べ added to the other evening?

I looked them up on good ol jisho.org and going though the sentences, it looks like 夕べ is usually translated as “last night” and 夕 is just “evening” (or used in jukugo).
However it looks like you can also pronounce 夕 as ゆうべ even without the hiragana present, so who knows what that means lol.

If you want to say last night, you will most likely want to write it like this: 昨夜. And when referring to evening I am fairly sure 夕方 is most common way to say it.
夕方 is more common than 夕 and 夕べ？ I thought the most common way to say something was already there. Or am I not correct in thinking so? This is all confusing. ;_; I’ll keep them all in mind, though. Thank you for your help!

AnonymousI think the べ is added because it is part of the kun’yomi as okurigana.
