Honestly I’ve had no trouble remembering nouns, but the verbs seem to have me pretty stumped for the most part. Besides the easy ones like “to eat” or “to sleep” and such.

I’ve been looking around for some better methods than just straight up memorization, but I can’t find any. I even try making mnemonics, and it helps with some, but others are nowhere near what they sound like/what they do that I’d end up further confusing myself.

Any tips for this? Since I will need these for the rest of the chapters.

I made up my own mnemonics for the verbs. To eat and to drink were easy as I had already learned たべもの (food) and のみもの (drink). You could try thinking of mnemonics again or just going through the list on anki every hour or so and drilling them in that way.

The more outrageous or bizzare the mnemonic, the easier it will be for you to remember.

Yeah to eat and drink were the simplest. They just added on the part of the noun we had already reviewed before. I’m sure most of these verbs also take parts from their noun-counterpart, but I guess I’ll just continue drilling it.

Anki on my phone is helping a bit, but the second set of verbs are probably worse than the first.

What ones are you having difficulty with? I’ll try and remember the mnemonics I used and share them with you. Might not work but it’s worth a shot.

Alright, here are the ones I have the most trouble with.

    わかります- To Understand
    おくります – To Send
    かえります – To Return(Home)
    あいます – To Meet
    ならいます – To Learn
    ききます – To Listen
    まちます – To Wait

To send – Think of a courier. When you want to send a big heavy parcel you send it by courier. Associate おくり with courier.

To meet – When you meet someone for the first time, you usually introduce yourself and say “I’m….”. Associate あい with I’m or I am. Then think of “I’m/I am…. Nice to meet you”.

To wait – Imagine your in line for a sports match (eg. baseball, basketball, soccer, football etc.), and the line is taking ages to move. Think of how impatient your getting waiting for the line to move so you can get into the stadium. Associate まち with match.

To listen – Imagine your a martial artist and your training alone in a gym. Your kicking the punch bag and it echoes around the room. Your kicks sound hard and brutal. Associate きき with kick kick.

The other ones I couldn’t think of a mnemonic for and just learned them straight up. If I do think of any more mnemonics, I’ll post them here.

Thanks they did help out. I’ll just try and learn the others as they are. Verbs list 2 seems pretty daunting, but I’ll give myself some time before looking for help.

No worries. Glad I could help out if only a little. I agree, list 2 was harder to learn. Take your time with it. After the verbs you’ll start learning な adjectives and い adjectives in season 4. There’s alot of them but they are extremely useful. Good luck. If you need anymore help or have any questions, feel free to ask.

    かえります – To Return(Home)

When I came across this one it sounded to me like Kairi from Kingdom Hearts. Being a typical damsel in distress, it’s up to you to save her and return her home.

Once you learn some kanji, they become 9001x easier. Obviously not an immediate fix or anything, but something to look forward to in future :)

I printed the pdf and taped it to my bathroom wall. I study it every time I use the washroom, lol. When I first started the verbs I drilled 3-4 a day really intensely. Any more than that and I would start confusing them with each other. I would say I had both verb charts 1 and 2 down in about a week using that method.

Another thing I do with any vocab I learn is to try and use it as much as I can in my daily life. When I do something I think of the verb and when I see an object I thing of its Japanese vocab.

I’m sure this post was useless to you as it’s pretty much common practice among foreign language learners.

Ya know, Bb, it might be an idea to start looking at who has access to your computer while you’re not watching. If it’s just you, maybe look into finding yourself a nice padded room to live in…
