Does memorizing vocabularly ever get easier? Having a rough time with the occupations one.

Or is it just the way a 60-year old brain works?

I reckon you start to get a feel for it after a while. Once you’ve gotten a few kanji under your belt, you’ll start to be able to intuit the readings for words you’ve never seen before, and even guess at their meanings.

But yeah, sometimes it’s just plain old rote memorisation. Maybe try picturing the occupation as you’re thinking of the word.

I did do that with the singer… thinking of the old almond joy song being sung… sometimes you feel like a nut… only not an almond, but a cashew…

I wrote out my passion list and have been working on it for a while, but I still haven’t gotten very good at memorizing them. I even try them out while I’m doing what I love (it’s cooking, BTW). Am i doing something wrong, or is this normal?

If life gives you melons, you might be dyslexic.

It helps to have a framework to hang things on, whether it’s mnemonics, or grammar to go with it, or even practice sentences.

    Those sentences do assist.

Hi John, I had the same problem till I went on WaniKani where I learned to use better than I already did, the mnemonics. I do the same with the vocab lists in textfugu. A lot of times I have to make my own mnemonics, but that can be fun, because the targetgroup of our course are young americans and I’m neither young (68) nor american. I use also the other languages I know to make them, even if that means that I have to remember in which language I did it . Although I use the Anki, for long lists I make for myself small paper pieces with japanese on one-side and the meaning on the other, so I can mix the order and take out the ones I know well. You can put them in your pocket and study them wherever you want. I know you can do that on your Anki too, but I have no Iphone or Ipad that I can take with me. Good luck!

Cool! I’ll have to do that.
