I am taking a theatre arts appreciation class and recently was assigned a group project for the history of theatre. My partner and I chose Bunraku, Japanese Puppet theatre. Our teacher wants it to be creative and being a student of the Japanese language I thought it would be really fun to do the introduction in Japanese which my partner will translate. I ran into the problem of the last part of the introduction being beyond my ability. If somebody could take a look and translate it into Japanese that would be very helpful and I’d be very appreciative.

“Today we will be talking about Bunraku Theatre, Japanese Puppet Theatre also called ningyo joruri and once known as ayatsuri joruri shibai.”

That is the part I’m having a hard time translating to Japanese. There is a lot of Kanji I’m still not familiar with so if you could respond writing it in Hiragana primarily that would be appreciated. Also if you have any ideas of things I should add to my Japanese introduction I’d like to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Oh, boy. I got to do an actual presentation in Japanese as uni last session – it’s not something I’d do again by choice. =P

    Um… let’s see…

    今日は、私たちが「文楽」という日本語の人形の芝居について発表いたします。文楽は「人形浄瑠璃」も呼んでいて、そして、昔で「操り浄瑠璃芝居」を呼んでいました。

Think of it as an opportunity to learn new kanji. =)

Ehh, shouldn’t you ask a Japanese person to help you instead?

Oh well, I’m bored, so I’ll give you my terrible translation!

    「今日は文楽という人形劇、あるいは人形浄瑠璃について申し上げます。昔は、操り浄瑠璃芝居として知られておりました。」

    With Hiragana:

    「今日(きょう)は『文楽(ぶんらく)』という人形劇(にんぎょうげき)、あるいは人形浄瑠璃(にんぎょうじょうるり)について申(もう)し上(し)げます。昔(むかし)は、操り浄瑠璃芝居(あやつりじょうるりしばい)として知(し)られておりました。」

“Ehh, shouldn’t you ask a Japanese person to help you instead?”

Exactly this. Try Lang-8 or something.

Thanks everyone for the responses. For lang 8 would the place to be to ask be in the groups or is there a forum there where it’d be best to ask? I’ll definitely take your translations and base my question on lang 8 off what you guys gave me.

When Koichi wanted to learn some Chinese (you can read about it http://www.tofugu.com/2013/09/25/what-i-learned-about-learning-japanese-from-spending-3-weeks-in-taiwan/) he used http://gengo.com/ to get translation. If you use gengo you have to spend some money on it.
