Wow, thanks so much everyone! I’m checking out all of your recommendations.

I can’t believe I had a hard time finding these in the past. Perhaps I failed to use the correct keywords. Either way I’m excited to be overwhelmed with options. :)

I was all set to say “Just get an iPod Touch and download Kotoba!” and then I watched the video Tom posted a link to and realized Koichi beat me to it. Well, except for the Kotoba recommendation. (For the record, I like Kotoba because it’s both free and thorough. And yes, it, too, uses the Jim Breen dictionary.)

Starting to think I need a t-shirt that indicates my status as a Koichi fangirl in training. (I promise to stay on the non-creepy side of fangirlism, though. ;))

    @ Crystal
Koichi certainly does make learning Japanese fun and interesting with his methods. Better than using a standard textbook.

@Crystal – Yeah, that’s what I’m doing for now. I’m doing it with my Droid though. I’ve heard some conflicting advice on the topic though. Some people agree with Koichi, and say a smartphone dictionary is all you need, and I’ve heard other says that the more expensive ones have some advantages. In the end the best advice I was given is to go to Akiba, and test a few of the expensive ones out, and see if they actual will be helpful for my needs.

I just use my iPhone its been really the only one i have ever needed. But lately some friends of mine have been saying that I should use a electronic dictionary. Not sure, but I might go and try a few. Unless someone knows somewhere they are sold in Australia, might have to wait till I head back to Japan. But I think i’m going to give it a go soon and see how it compares with my phone.

@Adam – Yeah, that’s been my thought process based on all of the feedback.

Yeah really curious hey, I’ll pretty much try anything if someone reckons it will help.

Same here. If I have more than one option I prefer to go with the optimal, but if I can have more than one option I’ll take them all. ;)

If I find one I like, or find that I didn’t like any of them over my smartphone then I’ll update the thread. If I wait till I get back then that’ll be sometime in July though.
