If you have a DS then this is quite cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALGBCKKpJXw
I’m sure you can acquire it somehow, read into that how you like!
January 3, 2012 at 7:10 pm #23492lol FlutterScape or the like, right? I’ve found a few carts on there for kanji but it’s not exactly beginner. Looks like it’d be a great program to help teach. Looking at the way Japanese is written makes me wonder if it’d be easier for left handed people to write… huh.
Anyway, most of the DS games seem to be in Japanese (I know, duh) so it might be a bit rough starting out but I guess it’s not hard to guess what they want and learn as you go. I wonder what the PSP will get now that is has a touch screen too.
January 3, 2012 at 7:31 pm #23497Zelda on DS, uhm….Phantom Hourglass is the one uses furigana, so if you don’t know a kanji you can just hit it on the touchscreen and it changes to kana, which is really neat!
The only problem is I really hated that game haha.
January 4, 2012 at 12:21 pm #23574I think I may have found a good DS game for learning; Kaite Oboeru: Dora-Gana. It seems to give the all the hiragana and katakana as well as some kanji (I think it was 100 but I could be wrong). It shows stroke order and sound from a native speaker. Looks like it may be worth a shot. Anyone used it yet?
June 4, 2012 at 11:12 am #31386Odin Sphere for the Playstation 2 has the original score in Japanese that you can listen to while you play.
June 4, 2012 at 3:50 pm #31392Is the DS region locked? I don’t have one at the moment but I’ve considered getting one. All I have right now is a US region PS2 and a Wii (which I think is also region locked?), so to play games in Japanese I’d probably have to get a new system or be less of a luddite and figure out roundabout means on my Mac. Buying anything would have to wait awhile, but it’s nice to get an idea of how much I’d need.
Also, anyone know of dating sim games that are fun and aimed at the straight girl crowd? AKB48 is not my cup of tea for dating sims. I remember hearing about some, but I can’t remember where or when.
June 4, 2012 at 3:56 pm #313943DS is region locked but the DS isn’t. I’m not sure about the PS2, I know it’s region locked for PAL/NTSC but I’m not sure if Japanese games work on US systems since they are classed as NTSC-J. PS3 is totally region free for games though, I’m slowly making my way through Yakuza Kenzan on there.
July 22, 2012 at 9:59 pm #33462Here is a nifty little game that might help someone learn or study their kana:

Basically it is a take on Space Invaders where you have to type out the kana before the ships reach the bottom of the screen.
July 24, 2012 at 10:05 am #33519Did you notice that the home link on the colors game has a lot more games?

Kana invaders is very cool.
I’d like to see something like that where you type the English word for Japanese words that come down.
August 27, 2012 at 10:49 pm #35036This is a game in progress that had a project on Kickstarter recently http://sanjigenjiten.com/
It’s basically a 3D interactive environment where you can wander around and click on items to hear the names/see the words for them. Interesting to see how it develops, the demo is okay but a bit clunky in the way you interact with things.
August 27, 2012 at 11:07 pm #35038All Valve games are in Japanese, including dota 2.
Skyrim is also fully translated including all voice actors.

August 28, 2012 at 12:00 am #35043what, it isn’t translated? Sorry for letting you down on that one… I am fairly sure all other Valve games have Japanese. It is all community translation, so it might be a little delayed due to the game only just being released? I think it will be translated soon.
August 28, 2012 at 12:03 am #35044lol it is in Japanese!
