I’m lucky enough to spend some time in Akiba next month. I love video games, and I was hoping to pick up some while I’m there. I have a PC, all the consoles, and a regular DS. I’ve been debating getting a PSP while I’m there.

My question is what games are good to get when you are only on the second season of Textfugu? I have a bit of knowledge, from previous studying, beyond the second season, and I hope to at least cover a few more seasons by the end of summer.

That said, text heavy isn’t something I’ll be able to do for awhile.

I know John wrote this awhile back, and some of those are on my list (http://www.tofugu.com/2011/10/10/top-5-nintendo-ds-games-for-learning-japanese/) Sharing your experiences with any of those would be helpful, but I’m looking for as many as I can!

    Thanks!

I don’t think any games will be very suitable at that level because of course they are designed for natives, at season two there are many grammar concepts you won’t know of yet. If you mean some games that are in Japanese but you can play regardless of language ability then I would say pick up some Japanese versions of games that are also out in the west, many of which you’d likely have an idea of how to play. e.g. Resident Evil

龍が如く見参!(Yakuza spin-off)is a pretty great game but it’s text heavy and has no English subtitles (no western release), you could always pick it up and save it for later. It is cheap on Play-Asia too though so it’s not that big a deal if you decide to skip it.

You should get a PSP and just play this and this

Yeah games are gonna be really hard yo. If based on what I saw recently with whatever Textfugu has, you’d have to at least be finished with Textfugu to understand anything. But be don’t be afraid to buy them and attempt to play them anyway. Even if you can’t understand, at least you have it on hand with you to play so if you think its too hard, just study up and come back once you think you feel confident enough. You can also do this with manga too.

Or learn and play as you go along, which I think is just as effective. At first, it will seem like you’re not having fun because you don’t know a thing but as long as you just keep going at it and picking stuff up, it will only get easier.

Thanks for the tips and the advice missingno15. I really appreciate it.

    I think you’re right.

In that case I’ll open up my requests for suggestions to any games. :)

But on this subject, I recommend anything that is more representative of real life like dating sims because they are easy to learn from, stick with more realistic sounding dialouge (more than others), and forces you to choose those option thingys at the end of a sequence which I think forces reading comprehension. Not to mention that you start to lose your sense of reality have a heck load of fun

Holy cow. I understood a surprising amount of that. I think you’re right about it being great practice. Thanks!

Ni No Kuni has furigana on all the kanji btw, that might be worth picking up for the future.

Although it’s an oldie now and is for the PS1, Metal Gear Solid is a classic. I’ve played a fair amount of games over the years and it’s by far still my favourite. Having only played the English version of the game, I hope to play the Japanese version at some point.

If you have a PS3 and a Japanese PSN account, you can buy a Japanese PSN Card and download it from the Japanese PSN store. Alternatively, if you’re into emulators and roms, you can download a PS1 emulator and the MGS rom from the net.

@kanjiman8 – MGS on PS1! An all time classic – brilliant! Oh, the memories.

I wants Ni no Kuni, for reasons completely unrelated to learning Japanese. Still hasn’t come out in English, though…

    @ andrew
Tell me about it :) . MGS 1 seems more like a movie than a game. Hideo Kojima is a genius.

Kanjiman what did you think of the Other Metal gear solid games?

Isn’t Ni no Kuni the Ghibli game? I should see if I can find that as well. Good idea.

MGS is confusing enough in English, thinking of it in Japanese is enough to give me a seizure.

I didn’t like 4 much though I must say, thought the camo stuff was a bit stupid.

    @ Norman
I’ve also played the VR Missions expansion pack for MGS 1 and MGS 4. The VR Missions was fun and quite challenging. MGS 4 on the other hand was disappointing. The story was very depressing and most of the game was full of cut scenes which lasted too long and didn’t make sense. I intend to play MGS 2 and 3 when I get a chance too.

    @ Yggbert
I agree with you about MGS being confusing. MGS 1 wasn’t too bad to follow, but MGS 4 became boring. Kojima sure does love using technical terms and talking about stuff the casual player doesn’t understand or doesn’t want to look up.
