Picture of Godzilla (courtesy of Google)

I’ve seen the word “Godzilla” written in Japanese as ごじら (or ゴジラ in katakana).
But wouldn’t it make more sense to write it like (or in katakana).

Please give me your input’s!  Godzilla really needs to know how to spell his name in Japanese or he will get angry…

    ありがとう、ジャレッド

    EDIT:

    Oh, the picture…
All I did was type in some simple html as shown below.

    <img src=”http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news/19827/_1280162644.jpg” alt=”Picture of Godzilla (courtesy of Google)” width=”250″ height=”253″/>

(Just ignore the “&#8221″ part in the URL)

src- The URL of the image I got from Google
alt- This is to be displayed for people with slow OS’s or for the blind
    width- width of the image
    height- height of the image

This picture was actually bigger than it is shown here, I made it the size that I wanted it to be.

Well there you are, the method for putting pictures in your posts :)

By and large, I’ve seen that Japanese tends to use じ most often to represent the “zi” sound. Case in point, the word “zigzag” is rendered ジグザグ. In my (extremely limited) experience, I’ve not seen ぢ used that much.

In any case, the “official” name for Godzilla in Japan is ゴジラ as it appears in all of his movies and related paraphernalia. So Godzilla can rest easy knowing that this is how he should spell his name. :)

Why is “official” in speech marks? It’s just official – he’s Japanese, after all. ゴジラ IS his name – it’s the “Godzilla” that’s spelt funny. It’s a combination of ゴリラ (gorilla) and クジラ (whale).

ありがとうございます to Gigatron for your answer, but this answer raises another question…
Are there any Japanese words that use the characters ぢ or ヂ?
Anyone can feel free to answer this question as well.

Oh, and to Joel the kitty cat, thanks for that little morsel of info.

I’m actually not sure why I put official in speech marks, to be honest. XD

As for the question, I actually couldn’t think of any words with ぢ in them. I had a quick browse at a dictionary and all that came up were archaic words/pronunciations one isn’t likely to hear any more, and the word 地境 which can be pronounced ぢざかい but is more likely to be heard as じざかい.

I reckon that ぢ is just simply not very common and/or largely obsolete. BUT, I am probably the farthest thing from an expert on this site or anywhere else, so take that with a whole shaker of salt.

縮める is ちぢめる. But yeah, my understanding is that in modern Japanese ぢ and づ are only used in rendaku compounds or つづ and ちぢ words. ぢ is rare.
