    Greetings, my fellow learners!
I am Kevin, an aerospace engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina, in the United States. I’m also an avid photographer, reader, computer programmer, game player, and coffee extraordinaire!

I’ve been to Japan twice (once in May-June 2010, the other in April 2011). Both trips were amazing. Japan is an absolutely breathtaking country. I would be glad to share my photos eventually! My fiance lived there for two years and posted many videos to YouTube – if you want a taste of Japan, check her videos out!

I’ve got a multitude of reasons for learning Japanese. Foremost is my desire to be able to read and write a second language. I used to be able to speak and write passable spanish, but 6 years of inactivity has left that very rusty. Second, I would like to work with a Japanese company or researchers, which would work immensely better if I understood their culture and language mannerisms. Third, I want to return to Japan and have an understanding of the language so that my sight-seeing experiences are enhanced. Fourth, I would like to be able to watch Japanese films (particularly the Ghibli films) without requiring the English dialogue. Lastly, my fiance lived there for two years and fell in love with the country and its people. I want to give her the opportunity to live there again without perpetually being concerned about my ability to get home by myself :) She has already decreed that our children (someday) are going to learn two languages (which I agree with) – I don’t want to be the one person in the family who does not know what they are speaking!

Anyway, I look forward to meeting and interacting with everyone! Today is day one for me! Here we go!

Hey Kevin, welcome to TextFugu! I’ve got a few relatives in NC (around Southport), and I gotta say that your state is really beautiful, and I’m especially jealous of your climate this time of year.

Anyway, good luck with your studies!

Greetings, Kevin! :) Welcome! How lucky that you’ve been to Japan. I’m so jealous! It’s great that you’re getting started with your Japanese studies. Does your fiancée already speak Japanese or is she learning as well? I look forward to checking out her videos. Thanks for posting the link.

Good luck with all of your studies!

Thank you for the warm welcome Hashi and Cassandra!

Hashi – our climate is abnormally warm right now – when I was younger, it would typically be much colder! Spring and Fall in North Carolina is a treat to behold!

Cassandra – she already speaks Japanese (she got up to the 5th or 6th level in the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). She lived just outside of Tokyo for two years, teaching English through the JET Programme. She had an amazing time, and it has taken her a very long time to readjust to the United States. She’s going to study International Relations to try and get a job that connects her to Japan. I don’t suspect I shall catch up to her in terms of proficiency because I have not lived there – but one day I hope to be able to converse with her, and perhaps get an opportunity to live in Japan!
