I’m originally from the US, but moved to Australia a few years ago.
I started to learn Japanese in college. The plan was tentatively to become a TESOL teacher and teach English in Japan while I studied martial arts there. I took 3 semesters and was going to do an exchange program to Japan, but I met my wife online and came to Australia instead.
Long story short, I currently have no plans to go to Japan at this point, but I still have an interest in Japanese martial arts and anime, and since I began learning the language I’d bloody well like to finish it. I’ve taken up self study on and off over the past 8 years (after college), mostly using my previous text books (Japanese for Busy People), and flash cards that I’ve made myself. If only there were the same type of digital resources back then. :)~~~
All of my attempts to continue have basically resulted in me relearning what I forgot, and not really going any further.
Until finally my house-mate decided to take a TAFE course (it’s kinda sorta like a community college) in Conversational Japanese as he was going to take a trip there with his brother (I couldn’t go >_<).
So I decided to take it too and advanced through 3 levels of it. In reality though there was about as much content in that as I had in one semester at college. So I am still at a very basic level.
So at this point I'm hoping to not slack off on it again, and actually achieve fluency.
I know it's so hard for me because I don't really have any true goals for it now, rather a simple stubbornness to continue for the sake of not giving up on it. I'm like an anti-quiter but a frequent pauser, which doesn't fit well with learning a language. LOL
So here I am, and maybe I can stop pausing my learning so I can actually advance instead of simply relearning the very basics over and over and over…

July 8, 2012 at 1:00 pm #32978Welcome! That’s certainly a lone journey with the language, but I’m glad you’re determined to finish it! Best of luck!

July 9, 2012 at 9:43 am #33011Hey, welcome to TextFugu! Good luck with your studies :)
July 9, 2012 at 10:39 am #33016I also think it’s admirable to continue learning for the sake of not giving up. I do think you would benefit from having a defined reason for learning Japanese as that would help with motivation! Is your wife interested in visiting Japan? Maybe you could plan a trip. Regardless, good luck with your studies!

July 10, 2012 at 3:59 am #33028So how did becoming a TESOL work out or not work out?

Yes she would like to visit someday, but it would likely be a long time coming. That said I would rather have a strong command of the language before hand anyway. I’m not sure how motivating a couple vacations to a country would be for learning an entire language, but I suppose you never know what might happen once I visit. So yeah definitely will go at some point. ^_^
As for the TESOl thing, I taught for awhile in the states, but since I moved here I haven’t done anything with it as my certification didn’t transfer well, as I didn’t have a full degree in it. I’m planning on going back to college over here, hopefully soon, but I might be going into Psychology instead. In college I was triple majoring in Psychology, Philosophy, and TESOL.

I’m sorry, did you say you were triple majoring? TRIPLE?
I have like, 3 hours spare each day in 1 major, let alone a double major, let alone your triple major.
And that isn’t even time allotted to assignments
Son, dat extreme.

July 25, 2012 at 2:44 am #33560Hmm looks like a few Aussies on the board. ^_^
LOL, yeah I was lucky in that I had an on campus job of being a computer lab technician. My manager was rather anal, so any actual problems with any of the computers he attacked them like he was in an episode of 24, so my actual job entailed me sitting in a computer lab for various hours doing my homework.
But had I not been so flighty in what I wanted to do, I would have walked away from those 4 years with an actual degree, instead of having to go back years later… Oh well. ^_^
