Hello guys! My name is Jahn and I’m from Germany (as the title might suggest). I speak German, English and Mandarin fluently (and a little French which is negligible), so I guess I’m kind of a languages person.

In the past few years I got into a few hobbies I really got into a few new hobbies (Headphones, mechanical keyboards, fountain pens). In all of these things the Japanese excel at what they do. When experiencing the products one can feel the pride in their craftsmanship. I really admire them for their excellent work ethics and mentality. Their culture and way of life fascinate me and I loooooove their food.

Watching anime finally brought me in more contact with this language and it fascinated me how Japanese and Mandarin share so many elements, but are so fundamentally different at the same time. I always wanted to learn another language and this one just seems so fitting! Learning Japanese will be much more of a challenge than learning English or French, but waaay more exciting, I bet! This is the first language I’m learning on my own so I hope you guys can give me some good support in case my motivation gets murdered by the kanjis >.>

I really look forward to this journey with you guys!

Welcome to the “new kids” group :) I wish you all the best! As a native English speaker, I’ve always thought the transition from Mandarin to Japanese may be easier but I had no idea!

Hey, Jahn! Good luck with your learning, it sounds like you already have a good start!

This place is a wasteland :(

    Hallo Landsmann,

happy to see that I’m not the only German here.
I actually think it’s kind of funny how similar our stories are in some areas, both of us finally decided to learn Japanese after watching a lot of Anime, and for both of us it’s the first time trying to self-learn a language.

May I ask what region of Germany you’re from? Maybe if it’s close we can meet up and have a chat about how things with Japanese are working out.

    Best regards,

    Dennis
