みなさん、こんにちは!はじめまして! (feel free to correct this if it’s wrong)

    Hi everyone,

I’m a games programmer from Sheffield in England who’s recently decided to take it upon himself to try and pick up Japanese again.

I say pick up again because three years ago I did about six months of learning before myself and my wife visited Tokyo (we actually visited a month after the tsunami). It was mainly just learning the kanas and a bit of vocab to help a little bit. In the end it didn’t really prove that useful as a big city like Tokyo is designed for foreigners :) Anyway, we fell in love with the place and want to go back in a couple of years, taking our two year old daughter with us, and travel around a bit rather than just staying in Tokyo. This will no doubt require at least a basic understanding of Japanese so that’s why I’m here!

    Howdy and welcome!

Knowing even a bit is definitely helpful. I went to Poland once without knowing anything except how to say “pickle” which, to my surprise, turned out not to be that useful. A few words would be been magnificent. So good job on planning ahead!

If you have any questions or need help with anything, feel free to throw questions at us with wild abandon. Also pop over to the Teamspeak thread (it’s a sticky so it should always be near the top) if you wanna get some practice in.

    Enjoy your time here!

The Teamspeak channel is an excellent idea. Conversing in the language is probably going to be the most difficult for me to practice so it’s good to know the resource is there. I should probably get a lot more Japanese under my belt before attempting to have a conversation in it, though :)

The Teamspeak server is currently down for an unknown reason -_- it’s been down since yesterday.

I don’t know when it’s going to go back up or it will ruin the competition on saturday …
