Hello hello,
I just finished college and I regret not taking a lot of classes, which includes Japanese. I tried (yes, tried. Not did) to learn through Textfugu last year, but I failed. Here I am, motivated and inspired to learn!
My main motivation right now is to learn as much as possible for my trip to Japan on August. Two more months and I am just starting Season 2… My goal is to be able to communicate (converse and write/type) with my cousins in Japanese.
I know a little bit of Chinese and I can read a wee bit. So, I am concerned that I would mix up Chinese characters with Japanese kanji.
Let’s do our best!
p.s. I still don’t get the hang of Anki.
June 8, 2014 at 2:09 pm #45384Welcome! Are we New Zealand, now? =P
Enjoy Japan – where are you going exactly? You planning on posting photos or a travel blog? =D
Just a brief warning, though: August is the hottest month of the year in Japan. My first (and sadly only, so far) trip to Japan was in August four years ago, and it was absolutely stinking hot…
June 8, 2014 at 5:44 pm #45385Hello Joel! No, we are in Middle Earth, not New Zealand XD
Thank you! I might only be in Tokyo. And yes, it will be blazing HOT >< we did not know how hot it would be when we booked the ticket.
Any tips to tackle the stinking heat?I have never blog about my trips, by the end of the day I would be too tired to do anything. I would try and do something for this one. =]
June 8, 2014 at 6:37 pm #45386Don’t rush around – take things easy. Trains are air-conditioned. Having a face-towel on hand would not look entirely out-of-place.
Climb Mount Fuji? It’s plenty cold up there. =)
June 9, 2014 at 12:43 am #45388Greetings from New Zealand, we are the real Middle Earth!

Oh man I would love to be in Middle Earth rather than where I am.
All the best lots of motivation and passion is needed! I think I might start again as well when school is not so busy! Have fun in Japan!P.S is your username a combination of sherlock and loki ?
June 9, 2014 at 8:28 am #45393I was about to sleep when I read these messages, so I went over a practice page thanks to you all!
Joel: Thank you for the tips Joel! Climbing Mount Fuji sounds like a great idea, but I highly doubt I would haha..
Nukedboom: Hello there New Zealand! I mean the real Middle Earth.. Nice to meet you too Nukedboom.
Alexis: Ah yes me too! Middle Earth is waaay cooler (the weather too).
Yeah, you should start again when you have spare time.
Thank you for the encouragement, Alexis.p.s. yeah, you got me. I thought I would get away with my username here lol..

Did you learn traditional Chinese characters or the simplified characters? Japanese kanji often match the traditional Chinese characters in meaning (and occasionally one of the readings as well), so knowing a tiny bit of Chinese may be confusing or it may be helpful. In any case, the two languages quickly diverge so I think after a while it won’t matter (for better or for worse).
How hot is it in Japan in August? I’m looking at weather records online and the average temperature seems to be 29 Celsius, which is about as hot as Ohio in August. I’ve never really considered that blazing hot :o
Not from the desk of Eihiko. Eihiko's boss took his desk away from him.June 19, 2014 at 8:57 pm #45514こんいちは、Sherloki!

Hello Eihiko!
Sorry for the late reply. I learnt the simplified Chinese characters. The simpler words still have same meaning, and when I do not know how to read the words in Japanese, I would still know the meaning. But, I am getting slightly confused on separating the reading. Hopefully the more I learn and practice, the easier it gets.Oh my, I thought it would be at least 30′C. I have never spent a summer in Ohio, but I did spend several days in Texas. It was 41′C. Nobody wanted to get out of the car. The thing about the weather in Japan is the humidity level. Not sure if it would be better or worse, I just hope I survive ^_^’
June 20, 2014 at 1:39 am #45515Yeah, humidity’s a killer. Mind you, when I was there, they were having a record-breaking heatwave, so my impression of what it’d be like for you may be a little pessimistic. =)
