Hello there! I started being interested in Japanese in high school, with the animes (like a majority of people!) I made a Japanese friend who was at my high school for a few years before heading back to Japan, and in college I took an immersion course for a year before having to drop out. I’ve gone back and forth between a few programs like Rosetta Stone and some smaller phone apps, but none of them really stuck with me. I’m trying to find a speaking partner so perhaps we can exchange hours of language conversation (One hour in Japanese, one hour in English), but I’m not sure where to start!

EDIT: I want to learn the language so I can read books an watch movies and converse with my Japanese friends. I have an open invitation to go to Japan and I’d like to not be the giant foreign woman who can’t speak the dang language!

I tried to look into Wanikani, but the website is just a splash page for me…am I missing something?

(also I found the thread on setting up Anki, which I don’t know what that is yet, but I’m sure I will soon ;D)

    Welcome to TextFugu!

As far as language partners go, if you can’t find one in your area (btw colleges are a great place to find them) check out the last post on this thread:

The one about Lang-8 and Skype.

As for WaniKani… It’s kinda like trying to enter the Emerald City.

It seems easy at first, then really hard, and then suddenly you’re in.

You need to sign up with your e-mail to be on the beta list. In a few days you’ll get an invite to join up.

Were you referring to this Anki thread?

You can also use the following thread to track your progress and share your ideas/concerns when you finish a season (gain a level ^_^):
