Hi!
デーシャ です。I took Japanese in high school and was, I confess, a terrible student. But I did reach a point where hirigana was easy to read.
I’ve tried learning on my own since then with varied levels of success – but my main reason (other than “I want to”) has been because of a dream of going t o Japan (especially some of the more rural areas). As life made that dream seem further out of reach while the demands of living continued, it eventually became more of a fantasy than a goal.
I recently got an airline job and I realized last month… My dream of visiting Japan feels within my grasp. Not only that, but it could potentially be something I do annually.
I made the decision that I shall try to go to Japan next fall. I intend this initial visit to just be in/around Tokyo, but I would like to be able to branch out into locations where English isn’t as common eventually. If I want to get around with ease, obviously I should know the language. The bright side of my past failures is that I have already collected a few resources, so I shouldn’t need t o spend much time trying to figure out what to use. Though, this will be my first time t rying Textfugu!
I am also using the experience chart from Japanese Level Up – so I may periodically include my current level if I post stuff. (I’m level 2 right now! I rerolled since I’ve not played in so long :P)I totally rambled. Sorry about that.
I’m just excited to begin my adventure again!

I’m a little bit jealous that you could be able to visit annually – I went there way back in 2010 and I still haven’t been able to visit again…
Got any places in particular you’re interested in visiting?
April 9, 2016 at 4:57 pm #49106It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten most of the places I wanted to go…
But I’m hoping that the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon will be far enough away from the holidays that I could try to attend some sort of release event. (Being in Japan for the release of a new generation of Pokemon has been a fantasy of mine. Though I’m sad the 3DS is region locked…) Of course, if I’m in Tokyo I’d want to visit Akihabara.
But the one dream I’ve had the longest has been to visit an onsen in Hokkaido while there’s snow all over.
April 9, 2016 at 5:10 pm #49107Aye, the region locking on the 3DS makes me sad. It’s one of the reasons I’ve still not upgraded my old DS.
I’ve been vaguely pondering whether it’s worth going to Tokyo for the Olympics. Other than that, I’ve been making a list of places I want to visit and things I want to do so that I don’t forget. It’s getting pretty big. =)
April 9, 2016 at 5:43 pm #49108Yea, I didn’t know that the 3DS wasn region locked when I bought it. But, I still have my DSi – so I can play old games at least. (I had started playing Zelda: Spirit Tracks in Japanese the last time I was learning Japanese. It was very slow going.)
I had a note book with places I wanted to visit, organized by region… but it appears I’ve lost it… I’m sure I’ll find it though! And in the meantime, I can enjoy the hunt for new places.
Got any particularly interesting locations on your list? :PApril 9, 2016 at 6:11 pm #49110Oh, many. Very many. =)
Here’s a completely random sampling: Yamadera in Yamagata prefecture, Kurobe Gorge Railway, Nokogiri-yama, Takao-san, Takehara and Onomichi, Himeji Castle (last time I was there it was undergoing rennovations), Sagano Railway, Kumano Kodo, Yanagawa, et cetera.
April 10, 2016 at 7:46 am #49114Ahaha, thanks, I’ll be sure to check all of those out!
I just set up my blog. It has a very adventure feel to it, as I hope that will give me a better way to incorporate my Japanese Level Up use – which is a fun way to stay motivated for me. Such excitement.
