Hey everyone! I’m Lauren, or Anikin, as my friends like to call me. I’m 22 and still in college, yay! I’ve been studying Japanese on and off for years now, but never got very far. I’ve never had a Japanese class before, my high school never offered it and neither does my college, so instead I bought rosetta stone. It was good at getting me to remember vocab, but sentence structure and reading and writing ..not so much. Right now the most I can say are things like “The flower is red” or “the dog runs”. haha After that failed attempt, I tried learning on my own a bit, which involved me memorizing hiragana and katakana then having no idea as to where to go from there! So here I am!

Anyway, my reasons for learning Japanese are:
I’ve always been interested in Japan and the Japanese language, ever since I was little. Something about Japan has always fascinated me. My interest only grew once I met my best friend in high school who shared the same interests as me and I finally had someone I could talk to about anything Japanese related. :)

Also, after I get my bachelor’s degree I plan on applying for the JET Programme, and it would make living in Japan a lot easier if I could understand at least a little bit of the language before I go there. And even if I don’t make it into the program, I know I’ll at least visit Japan some day.

That’s that! Going to actually start learning tomorrow since it’s already past midnight.

Hi Lauren, great to have you here on TextFugu! How long till you get your degree and you can apply to JET?

Thank you! I’m still maybe 3 years away from getting my degree, mainly because I didn’t know what I wanted a degree in for a while after high school. This will just give me extra time to study as much as I can of the language before I go. haha

Lauren – welcome! I’m sure Textfugu will help more than Rosetta Stone. ;) Welcome and good luck with your studies!

Thank you! It’s definitely helping a lot more than Rosetta Stone so far. With rosetta I could repeat after them just fine, but I had no idea what I was saying half the time! Now I’m understanding how sentences go together, and it’s great!

Oh yeah I ‘acquired’ Rosetta Stone and didn’t like it at all. It’s only really decent for teaching phrases rather than learning how the language actually works.
