Hi everyone, my name’s Carlie and I’m a 23 year-old nerd……yep, that pretty much sums me up lol.
I want to learn Japanese for many reasons, but probably the biggest reason is to one day teach English in Japan….I realize that is a far-reaching goal, so a more short-term goal is that I’d like to be able to properly converse with a few of my fluent Japanese-speaking friends who live in Japan.
I’ve been going through the free chapters for about a month now and I really like Textfugu’s style. I finally bit the bullet and bought Textfugu on Mon. but am just now introducing myself, so I apologize for being a bit slow :/
Currently I’m hoping studying Japanese will be a good distraction. I just had to put down my 16 year-old dog Herbie 2 days ago (I’ve had him since I was 8 years-old, so I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but I feel like a part of me died with him), so life really sucks right now (for lack of a better word), and I’m desperate to find anything to occupy my thoughts. I try to limit Japanese studying to 2-3 hours a day. Sorry, I truly don’t mean to be a downer, but if anyone knows a good website, youtube vid, game, etc. (other than tofugu of course) please let me know…..I’d greatly appreciate it.
Sob story aside, I’m looking forward to pestering everyone with most-likely stupid questions in the forums, and hopefully make a few new friends in the process :)
December 1, 2011 at 12:06 pm #21710Hey Carlie, welcome to Textfugu! Sorry to hear about Herbie :( We had to put down my dog this summer too, so I know how you feel.
December 1, 2011 at 12:29 pm #21712Well here is a link to the funniest intro of all time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWf7uxjJ0DY&feature=player_embedded
and welcome!
December 1, 2011 at 1:00 pm #21713hahahah thank you Yggbert, that is an awesome intro to Dead Rising 2. I played the first one on xbox but never tried the second one….sandbox mode would be epic too!
Thanks again :)
December 1, 2011 at 6:11 pm #21726Carlie, sorry about your puppy. :( I totally understand what you mean about part of you dying with him.
Welcome to the forums. Glad to have you. :) Pester away with questions! That’s what we’re here for.
You study 2-3 hours a day? That’s impressive! Keep up the great work!
December 1, 2011 at 9:41 pm #21734Welcome!
I’m sorry to hear about your dog, too. It’s never an easy thing, especially when they’ve been part of your family seemingly forever.
I do have to say that studying 2-3 hours a day is great! Don’t think it’s very little time to study – it’s a whole lot more than I can afford! I can only afford to study about an hour a day on most nights. But as long as you’re consistent, and try to maximize whatever free time you have, it doesn’t matter if you study just a short while. It’s a marathon, so slow and steady will win the race :)
Best of luck!
December 3, 2011 at 8:04 pm #21923Sorry about your dog Carlie! I’m impressed with the amount you study also! I have the advantage of total immersion at this point, but that is so helpful that you have friends that you can practice conversation with. If/When you come to live in Japan, it’ll be incredibly helpful to have some Japanese under your belt, I wish I had!
December 4, 2011 at 12:33 am #21933I just wanted to say thank you everyone for the nice responses……they’re more appreciated than you’ll ever know :) (esp. today; for some reason today has been particularly hard…haven’t left bed all day) ;’(
And I hope I didn’t sound presumptuous about studying 2-3 hours a day….I still only know the first 15 Hiragana and some misc. vocab. What takes me 2-3 hours a day to learn probably takes most people only an hour – mostly due to the fact that I’m a perfectionist and therefore feel the need to go over something 15 million times lol. So I apologize if anyone felt discouraged by my original post; that was not at all my intention.
Again, thank you all so much!!!! <3
January 3, 2012 at 9:11 pm #23516Just thought I’d stop by and read your post, since you commented on mine! Welcome! Welcome!
I’ll be reviewing all the season 1 material for the next week or so I think since that’s as far as I got, and I sort of had a break due to holiday madness over the last few weeks. So we are sort of in the same boat. I had finished the season, but definitely need to refresh before I move on to season 2. I added my Yahoo messenger info on my profile here if you want to chat on there. Just click my name under my avatar to see it. Even if we don’t know any real Japanese yet we could still talk about learning the kana, and talk about nerdy stuff like video games and anime. Hehe. Cheers!
