Hi everybody, wabiwasabi here. I’m 22 years old and come from the little country of Wales. :)
A few years ago, I started up with Heisig, and I thought at the time the method was fantastic. I got to 700+ kanji, and thought I was flying. I ground to a halt though, as I began to feel that I was memorising (through boring techniques) the kanji, without being able to actually use the language. My partner, learning Korean, was getting along really quickly with things like speaking and reading, and I felt like I was being left in the dust (the lack of readings meant, in terms of being able to use Japanese, I was!).
In walks TextFugu. I finally checked out the site after umming and ahhing about it for a while, and I’ve really got that “wish I’d clicked here sooner!” feeling at the moment. My prior knowledge of kana has meant I’ve got through the first free season pretty quickly, but the style of lessons and layout of the content has me really excited.
I want to learn Japanese because I have always been fascinated by the indigenous religion, and want to study it in much more depth. Also (and how hilarious is this?) I’m an anthropologist, and my dream since getting into anthropology has always been to spend an extended period of time with the Ainu, living through their religious festivals and rituals.
This turned out a lot longer than I planned – I’ll finish by saying I’m really pleased to meet you all, and hope you’re all having a great day. :)
