I’m Chris. I lived in Japan, but spent my time there on the US Navy base and working on an MBA, so I never learned Japanese. I miss Japan and love having lived there, but I hate having to answer the question that people always ask once they learn I lived in Japan, “Do you speak Japanese?”

    So…

    I am learning Japanese because:
I want to pass the Level 5/4 Japanese Language Proficiency Test
I want to be able to have conversations in Japanese with other Japanese language meetups
I want to be able to read some books/magazines in Japanese
I want to take my fiance to Japan and be able to speak the language during that trip.
I want to be able to live and work at the Japanese Tokyo Friends House for a year or two.
I want to be able to tell people that I lived and worked in Japan without having to admit that I didn’t learn the language.

    Hi Chris and welcome!

Don’t feel bad or ashamed that you lived in Japan and didn’t learn the language, you must have had an amazing experience to want to go back, and I think that’s what’s important (just my two cents). ;)

Best of luck with your studies!!
