Hey everyone,
This is my first post here on Textfugu(not sure why I’ve waited so long since joining to post), I just wanted to say that I’ve been on board the japanese language learning train here for about two months going on three and I have to say that I’ve never had so much fun learning a language as I have here! Aside from english, I know spanish naturally because growing up it is all we spoke in the home so I picked up on that, and I learned enough Portuguese to be able to communicate and understand basic stuff with family friends who came from Brazil and didn’t speak much spanish or english.
The reason I’m learning is I plan to visit Japan with friends early next year and I thought it’d be nice to at least know just enough to get by, but the way textfugu teaches makes it so fun that it has somewhat become a hobby for me to casually spend an hour or two a day after work trying to learn more.
Oh, my names Michael, I’m 24 and I work in the field of mortgage lending. I’m always searching for great music. Ever since I was young I would play rpg’s and what would always draw me to them was the music. I’m a hobbyist musician for 10+ years and just recently I started listening to more music on the japanese market and have been reminded of a lot of those melodies/tunes that would strike me in those rpgs, it’s strange to explain, but if anyone knows of any japanese music that you like, let me know okay? :)
But yeah, hello all!! =)

What a coinkee-dink, I happen to be a 24 year-old musician as well! What do you play, man?
July 8, 2013 at 10:50 pm #40984Hey there Nate,
Yeah totally! I play guitar as my main instrument and I’m literally into everything, but I love playing soulful music – anything with major 7′s or minor 7′s involved, whether upbeat or ballad style. I’ve noticed a lot of that kind of stuff present in J music vocal and keyboard melodies which is just so awesome that it blows my mind listening to it.
How about you, what instrument/s do you play? Any specific genre’s that you enjoy jamming to?
July 9, 2013 at 7:50 am #40987Yea’, man, I can dig it. Fun j-pop melodies are fun.
I actually play bebop jazz, principally. I can play almost everything, except for classical guitar stuff, I have a pretty awful classical fingerpicking technique.
You ever think about playing jazz? There are a lot of crazy/whacky chords going on that involve minor/major 7 chords, and beyond.
Do you have any of your stuff on hand? I’d be down to listen, man.
July 10, 2013 at 6:22 pm #41023Nice! That’s awesome, I wish I could play/understand jazz as well as those of you who play it. I don’t think I’m good enough with my timing and knowledge of chord and scale structure for that sort of thing, I enjoy pretending to play it when I do freestyle sessions during small gigs with friends.
I don’t have any stuff to share that would be worth listening to unfortunately, just a collection of small clips that I usually record on my phone whenever I get ideas for the sake of not forgetting it.
How about you, got any stuff on the tube? It’d be cool to hear some of your stuff.
July 12, 2013 at 3:05 pm #41058Totally, man, I run a youtube where I put up free lesson/licks for jazz. They’re made for people who are kinda’ already into jazz, but there are a lot of great resources on there for learning.
If you’re really actually interested in learning a bit, I’d be totally down to help/answer any questions you have about it. Let me just say that way too many people make it way more complicated than it is! A lot like learning Japanese, lol.
Anyway, if you click on “video games” in my signature here under this message, it’ll bring you to my youtube channel.
