Hello! I’m Chel, from the SF Bay area in California. I want to learn Japanese because I want to be able to read manga and light novels that haven’t been translated, I want to play (and possibly make) visual novels (which are often untranslated), and I want to be able to watch anime passively without relying on dubs (due to ADHD I have a hard time sitting and watching if I’m not doing something else, and it’s hard to read subtitles and keep stitch/row counts in my head).
Eventually I’d like to visit Japan, and maybe live there for a (short) while, and I’d like to be able to communicate and get around on my own, if possible.

Lucky you! You’ve got the largest Japantown in North America right on your doorstep! Lots of practice opportunities ;)
This is definitely a good place to be if you’ve got an attention span like mine. You can come and go as you need to, and there’s also a pretty solid community backing it if you need motivation.
