    Hi guys,

I finally thought I’d introduce myself. I’ve been holding off because I’m a little shy…but I’ve just loved what I’ve been learning so far and I have some questions as well.

First of all, my name is Lauren and I live in South Australia which is perhaps the most boring part of the country, and it’s very dry and hot. I live in a small coastal town known for the lead content in the air, great stuff. My interest in Japan and it’s culture, and food, and entertainment, and language has been steadily growing over the past two years. I can’t pinpoint why I love everything about Japan or why I want to learn the language, I just do. I’ve started saving for a three week trip to Japan which will be my main motivation to learn Japanese.

As soon as I discovered Tofugu channel on Youtube I watched all the videos and was pretty tempted to delve into Textfugu, but still pretty sceptical about whether or not it was the real deal. Well, turns out it is because I dived upon the opportunity to buy my full membership for 50% off. Yessss! I currently have the last lesson and the season review left to study in season 2. I’m absolutely loving it.

I have read in the Textfugu forum about Remember the Kanji by James Heisig and apparently a lot of people recommend those volumes, do you guys think it’s worth me buying a set if I’m committed to learning Japanese? Also, can anyone recommend anything and everything (that works, of course) to help me with my studies of the Japanese language? I’ve read about a few things, but I’m just not sure what actually works.

    Anyway, that’ll do for now.

Thanks for being awesome Japan and fellow Textfugu-ers!

    Hi

about the heisig books: i recomend them if you have just begun to learn the kanji. he uses that kind of system like koichi does on textfugu.

    but

if you already have learnd a lot of kanji from textfugu, it can be kind of tricky to use heisig too. it than can happen like: the kanji for “white” looks like a shell for koichi or like a ricecorn for heisig. and and after some hundreds of those kanji you can get some problems becoause it can be confusing.

my english is bad, i hope you still understod what i meant ^^

Hey Lauren! I love how your forum name extends all the way into your post. Pretty awesome.

I think Textfugu will have everything you’ll need for a good while (half a year to a year, depending on your ambition level and the rate at which Koichi updates). After season 2, the workload will start to increase with every lesson/season, so I’d advise you to wait a little before you commit to too many things. That being said, I’m simply projecting myself onto you. If you have no problem with doing Japanese for hours a day, you should go right ahead! :D

@Moni Oni Thanks for that…I’ll definatly keep that in mind regarding the mnemonics and trying not to get them confused between Textfugu and RTK. :)

@ルイ (I had to get out my katakana chart to type your name…haven’t quite covered katakana yet) Yeah…I thought there’d be a ‘…’ to shorten my user, but nope, apparently not. Haha. Well, I think you’re right, I might wait a while. I’m the same, I can easily spend a between an hour and a half to three hours a day on my Japanese studies every day. Not exactly by choice, just simply because there’s so much new stuff to take in…but I not complaining. I love it! :D

Hey, welcome to the forum! I’m from Sydney, Australia myself, and we have a semi-regular who is from the beautiful “Radelaide” over there as well! When you’re just getting started, Japanese can be like weight loss, there’s so many methods and people pitching one idea over another (yes I like Remembering the Kanji “RTK” too). However the important thing is that you just start doing something, so it’s good you’re getting started.

If you want to know more about what RTK is, you can try this thread. http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?id=1958 , although there is a few really good explanations on this forum in threads as well.

Anyway, I hope it all goes well!

    Same here! Hello everyone.

    About RTK, I wanted to use it before… but I can’t wrap my head around the keywords. I find Textfugu’s explanations and stories more fun ^^;;
