I just started TextFugu after doing some Japanese classes at an adult class centre. As my partner can’t go to regular classes, we’re hoping the learn at your own pace will work out better for us!

We’re Australian, and hoping to learn Japanese as something to do together. I personally hope to get good enough to read well and speak passably enough to work either with Japanese companies, or even work in Japan (I’m a mechanical engineer).

Nice to meet you all :)

I’m in Australia also. And have a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering (though I’m not working as an engineer right now).

To be frank, though, you’re going to have difficulty finding work in Japanese companies. It’s much easier for a company to hire someone who’s a native speaker of Japanese, even if you’d be the better engineer…

Hey guys! Yeah lol I don’t have rainbow christmasland dreams about working for a Japanese business, I’m a very realistic person. However, in my current job, even a basic understanding of the language would really help with dealing with some suppliers, so that’s goal #1!

That said there is apparently a big push currently for Japanese industry to hire foreign workers. Whether this is actually happening or not though is another story.

The most likely way to snag a job over there is to get a job over here that also have branches in Japan and work towards getting a transfer. Which obviously knowing Japanese would tip in your favor. ^_^

    Melbourne! :D

And yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how it went. Internal movement is the easiest movement!
