Hello there! I love Japan (culture, food, anime, etc.) and I’ve been studying Japanese off and on for years, but have stagnated over the last couple years. A couple friends and I are going to Japan in November and while my one friend is fluent I don’t want to rely on her for everything so I’m giving TextFugu a shot and really enjoying it!

Welcome! Got any places you were planning to visit in particular?

How does a town in Minnesota get a name like “Bemidji”? =P

The current plan is to head down to Kyoto and Nara and then Okinawa stopping along the way then come back to Tokyo and spend a bunch of time there. It’s my first time in Japan so I’m mainly relying on my friend who has been there a bunch to drive the trip a bit.

Bemidji is named after a native american chief I think, it’s an odd name though and I think every time I tell someone the name I have to spell it. :-)

Have you been to Japan / Have places you recommend?

I went waaay back in August 2010. We went Tokyo -> Osaka -> Hiroshima -> Kyoto -> Tokyo, with side trips to Matsumoto, Nara, Koya-san, Himeji, Miyajima, and Mount Fuji. Heartily recommend all of those, except maybe Osaka Castle. http://japan.jrudd.org/

Big tip: with an itinerary like that, I strongly suggest you get a hold of a JR Pass before you go – gives you free travel on all JR trains aside from the fastest shinkansen types. http://www.japanrailpass.net/en/

Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to get a rail pass before we go!
