Hello, I’m Alexandre Vicente from Rio de Janeiro, I speak Portuguese, English and Spanish and I’m studying Japanese and French. I wanted to do Japanese first but I thought that it was too hard for self-learning and now I finally stopped postponing it and now I’m eager to get Pokemón Y soon and play it in Japanese :3

Welcome to TextFugu and Happy New Year!

That’s an impressive list of languages. Did you learn Spanish while growing up or did you learn it later?

Thanks ^^ I learned it later, my first foreign language was English which I did learn while growing up, although Portuguese and Spanish are very similar.

How long did it take roughly to get to the point you could confidently hold a conversation?

    #43762

5 years in English, but I was 5 when I started so it was a bit harder, in Spanish I already was pretty confident by the first year due to the similarities to my native language.

How long have you been going at French?

    #43794

4 months, I’m still not confident enough to hold a conversation.

If you were after just 4 months I think I would kinda hate you… LOL.

I’ve been learning Japanese for so long, but I haven’t been able to stick with it long enough to get anyway solid.

Haha, but as Portuguese, French and Spanish are all Latin-based it is easier for a native speaker of one to learn another, I spent a long time to improve my English and it is much closer to my native language than Japanese, so I guess I may take a long time to be able to hold a conversation, or even being able to read hiragana in an acceptable speed lol

I you’ll find that reading Hiragana isn’t so hard if you keep practicing. Katakana tends to be harder as you generally have less exposure to it, but Kanji is the real pain of Japanese learning. It will make you want to melt your eyes so you don’t have to worry about them any more. LOL.

Haha, guess you’re right, Kanji was what made me postpone my Japanese studies…
