Honestly, I’ve always wanted to learn another language. It was forced on me in school and I always pushed back against it, never putting in any real effort. That is a huge regret of mine. I’m doing this for myself, not for anyone else. It’s just for me and because of that it is that much more terrifying that I’ll fail. But I want this and I’m willing to work for it.
Onto the list:
- Speaking a second language
- It’s a language of things I enjoy: journaling, fountain pens, inks, anime, food…
- I would love to travel to Japan one day and being able to at least understand some of the language would be a huge plus
- I want to feel like I can learn another language, that I’m capable of that knowledge
- Oh oh oh! Too be able to read Japanese literature that hasn’t been translated. *swoons*
- It’s badass :)January 25, 2014 at 4:50 pm #43730Honestly, I’ve always wanted to learn another language. It was forced on me in school and I always pushed back against it, never putting in any real effort.
That’s cause they go “here, you can learn French, German or Chinese. Pick one”. I mean, I’ll grant there’s no way you’re going to get a teacher for every language, but you’re not going to get people excited about language learning by forcing them into one they’re just not interested in.
Though, I did enjoy learning Chinese at school enough in years seven and eight that I picked it as an elective in years nine and ten – but then they put me in a combined background/non-background class, where I was completely overwhelmed and absolutely hated it.
Been enjoying Japanese, though. =)
January 26, 2014 at 7:19 am #43745Yeah we had French or Spanish, neither of which I felt any connection too. Also, we started in 6th grade and I was a bit of a brat. So like math, it builds and I never put any effort into it.
This is an exciting redo for me, because there are so many connections I have to Japanese culture, it’d be nice if I could read and understand the language. Also, I’m excited for the challenge. :D

Yeah I also was given the choice between Spanish and French. Picked Spanish first, didn’t like it, switched to French and liked it even less. Though at least the Teacher’s aid in French was hot. Though that also resulted in me only ever learning romantic phrases to shoot at her any time she called on me to speak.
With Spanish I focused on nonsensical phrases that were technically correct but didn’t make any sense. Like, ‘The cheesy cat will be emperor until night falls.’ I liked language learning I just couldn’t be bothered to put forth the effort. If Japanese had been available it would have been a completely different story…
