I am a 50+ woman from Tallahassee, Florida. What gor me interested in learning Japanese? Anime and then manga. I started watching the anime on Netflix and I have watched or read many different types and genres for about a year. After a few months of watching I realized just how different a culture Japan is from the U.S. and I wanted to know more. I have browsed and read from a lot of different resources. Starting in November I signed up for one Japanese self-paced on line course but it moved too fast for me. A month or so ago I joined japanesepodcast101. I like it for its audio and visual lessons. I have used Dr. Moku to learn hiragana. I joined worldfriends through j-list. I have a couple of Japanese penpals who wanted to learn English. I had watched a number of Koichi’s youtube videos and really enjoyed them. After reading about Textfugu, I decided to give it a try. Did Season 1 and enjoyed it. Signed up for 2.

My friends have sent me lots of photos of springtime in Japan. Their visits to other cities and shrines and gardens. I want to travel to Japan an visit and not be the “ugly American”. Go to an onsen with Michi in Beppu, go out drinking with Toshie in Tokyo and hiking with Miyuki in Sanda. I am doing my best.  Determined that Kanji won’t kick my butt! At least, not too hard.  (-_-;)     Kathy

Wait… a self-paced online course moved too fast for you? =P

Welcome, in any case. If you wanted to try climbing Mount Fuji, you certainly wouldn’t look much out-of-place. =)

Too fast.  lesson 3, verb endings present and past tense. iru/eru and u endings nai forms and all in a 30 minute video with 20 minute audio and  a couple of pages of notes. Lesson 4 threw in mono, koto, sono and kono.  Datta and jya nai were covered in the audio and video but nothing in the pdf notes. Oh, and the particle wo.  Yeah, no framework building like we have here.

Kathy, welcome! :) I can see how that would be too fast, not enough time to solidify one concept before moving on to the next. I hope you find Textfugu a much better resource!

Welcome and good luck with your studies!
